One of my favorite community events of the entire Webster year is returns this weekend.

Of course, it’s Community Arts Day (CAD), scheduled for Saturday April 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Webster Schroeder High School. CAD is the Webster Central PTSA’s annual celebration of the arts, a showcase of the musical and artistic talents of our K-12 students. It’s basically a great big show-off day, a family-friendly festival with displays of art, musical performances, dance, a talent show, demonstrations and more. PLUS there are carnival games, community group exhibits, a bake sale, craft booths and lots of food. Plus, the admission is FREE.

I was checking the CAD Facebook Page for the latest news, and saw that a lot of our favorite CAD features will be returning. (Well, at least a lot of MY favorites.) For example, I love watching our Webster SparX Robotics team demonstrate their robots. They’ll be back in the gymnasium from 10 to 11 a.m. The Webster’s Got Talent talent show is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria, when very brave young entertainers get up in front of the audience to strut their vocal or dancing or musical stuff. And of course, thousands of clay sculptures and paintings, drawings and wire art, baskets and floral art will be on display in panels stretching all through the Webster Schroeder hallways.

And I especially like stopping by all of the information booths set up by community business, organizations and agencies. It’s my annual check-in with my buddies at the Friends of Webster Trails, Webster Library and Webster Museum, among many others. (And if you have never seen a child trying to figure out how to use a rotary phone, you really should stop by the museum table.)

Here are a few other notes of interest you’ll find at this year’s Community Arts Day:

• There are three collection tables this year:
  • Soles4Souls, a Tennessee-based nonprofit which turns unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunities for people in need. 
  • Project Prom, which provides gently-used formal attire to middle and high school students who might not be able to afford nice clothes for their prom, ball or other school dance.
  • Band/Orchestra Instrument Donation, where community members are encouraged to donate your gently-used band or orchestra instruments for students in need who can’t afford to buy their own.

• The Kids Zone, where kids can make Earth Day cards, color some coloring pages, make some orgami, play with LEGOS and puzzles, and get a temporary tattoo.

• Spoken Word Poetry, from 11 a.m. to noon. Bring your favorite poem (whether slam, dub, narrative, performance, beat, hip hop, rap or other) and share it with the CAD audience.

• School musical performances: all four secondary schools and three elementary schools will perform a sample of the dramas and/or musicals they performed this year. So if you missed seeing On the Town at Webster Schroeder or Disney Descendants at Willink Middle School, or any of this year’s performances, catch a little bit of each at Community Arts Day.

Community Arts Day 2026 will be held at Webster Schroeder High School, 875 Ridge Rd. on Saturday April 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s no charge for admission and there’s plenty of parking.

I usually don’t post this particular blog until the middle of February, but I think we all need a little breath of spring today, so I’m going to shout it to the rooftops: IT’S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT COMMUNITY ARTS DAY!

This annual event, held at Webster Schroeder High School, is a family-friendly festival which showcases the musical and artistic talents of Webster School District K-12 students, and invites dozens of community groups to display their great contributions to our community. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

So that’s still a few months away, but I got an email today saying that registrations are now being taken for community groups, vendors and performers who’d like to participate in this year’s Community Arts Day. For $35, community groups can have a table to share information, calendars of events and sign-ups. Vendors can sign up for $50. Additional opportunities are available for auditorium, gymnasium and small stage performances. Click here for more information.

Organizers are also looking for interested community members to join the planning committee and help make this event a success. Email CAD@websterptsa.org to find out more about volunteer opportunities.

A few weeks ago, I posted a blog about Community Arts Day (CAD), highlighting all of the fun, family-friendly displays, activities, crafts and community booths that make this one of my favorite events of the whole year. It’ll be held at Webster Schroeder High School on Saturday May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I recently got an email from Stacie Peters, one of the driving forces behind this event, reiterating a lot of those same points of interest, but adding several others. I share that email with you today pretty much in its entirety … because she said things better than I could, basically.

Stacie wrote,

CAD is a PTSA-sponsored event, created in 1976 as a joint venture with each of Webster’s schools that raises money to support cultural arts activities in the buildings.

Our amazing volunteers are what make this event so successful each year! Each school building has its own CAD rep who helps get volunteers and information out to the families. More than 300 volunteers include many of our middle and high school students who earn service credits. We even have volunteer spots for our 4th and 5th graders to help out this year.

We are extremely grateful to Michael Roller, Webster Director of Fine Arts who has worked closely with our CAD team in ensuring this day is a huge success. Our partnership with Michael connects us to all of the 11 building art and music teachers who put so much of themselves into this day. And we can’t forget our “behind the scenes” team of helpers, our incredible custodians. Head Schroeder custodian Jeff Germano and his team are the superheroes who help us days ahead of the event, day of the event and take down after the event. We can’t thank them enough for all their hard work.

Some new items…

• We have a brand new flower sale where you can purchase a beautiful flower plus a pot with accessories that can be added 
• Our One Webster Art Project this year will be all about the endangered monarch butterflies! Butterfly kits were given to each building for students to paint butterflies. The final exhibit will be near the cafe wall at CAD. 
• We will have theater performances by many of the school musicals that were held this year! Buildings that are performing will be singing a song of their choice from their musical.
• Flag Performance by the Webster Colorguard
• Big news for our families with littles: the inflatables are back !

Food:  

• Sweet treat table at the main entrance
• concessions (pizza, snack items) in the cafeteria 
• Mr. Snowy cotton candy by the gym
• the Schroeder special ed classes who work daily in the Ridge Cafe (located in the library) will be selling beverages such as coffee, tea and hot cocoa . 

My favorite thing to see at Community Arts Day is all of the artwork created by our talented students. Every school and every grade from kindergarten to senior year is represented.

There’s still time to sign up to volunteer. Adult and student volunteers are what make this event a success. Students receive community service hours for volunteering.

Community Arts Day 2025 will be held at Webster Schroeder High School on Saturday May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There’s no admission, and remember that this event accepts only cash for payment (for things like the bake sale and plant sale). Craft vendors will accept debit and credit cards.

I know that spring is just around the corner when I start receiving emails from the organizers of Community Arts Day (CAD). And since this year it seems like spring will NEVER arrive, it’s rather appropriate that CAD has been scheduled later than usual.

This annual event, held at Webster Schroeder High School, is a family-friendly festival which showcases the musical and artistic talents of Webster School District K-12 students, and invites dozens of community groups to display their great contributions to our community.

Normally, Community Arts Day is held in mid-April, but this year (thanks to some scheduling issues) it’s been moved back to Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. So it’s a little later this year than usual, but the time is NOW to start planning for it.

Registrations are now being taken for community groups, vendors and performers who’d like to participate in this year’s Community Arts Day. There are also several opportunities to become event sponsors or make an in-kind donation. Click here to find out more and to register your group.

Normally around this time of year, I start previewing the upcoming Community Arts Day, which is one of my favorite events of the year.

This annual event, held at Webster Schroeder High School, is a family-friendly festival which showcases the musical and artistic talents of Webster School District K-12 students, and invites dozens of community groups to display their great contributions to our community.

It’s normally held in mid-April, but this year, thanks (I believe) to some scheduling issues, it will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. So it’s a little later this year than usual, but it’s still something you want to put on your calendar right now.

Community Arts Day is a terrific day of music and art, displays, demonstrations, crafts and food. The event was created as a collaborative effort to raise funds to encourage and enhance fine arts through the Webster School District, and it relies heavily on volunteers to help it run smoothly. There are many ways you can help, including joining the planning committee, acting as a building rep for your child’s school, become a performer or an exhibitor, provide monetary sponsorship, and much more.

A thousand thank-yous to everyone who came by my table at Community Arts Day (CAD) on Saturday to say hi! I know of at least a few people who came to the event just to meet me (which was cool!) and several others who just happened upon it, with a “I LOVE your blog!” as they walked by. I might have even introduced it to a few who’d never heard of it before. Thank you all for your kind words.

I was delighted to be a part of CAD this year, which as you know is one of my favorite annual events. As always, it drew some really big crowds (I think the rainy, windy weather helped) and I was pleased to see a lot of people checking out the community agency displays and learning about local businesses and the services they provide. In particular, I always enjoy watching kids play with the vintage toys brought by the Webster Museum and try to dial a rotary phone.

If you and your family were able to spend some time there today, you know what a great time it is and were amazed by the pieces of artwork created by our very talented school children.
