Webster community mailbag

mailbag iconJust a few things in my mailbag this morning.

The first is a reminder about the monthly Flapjack Benefit Breakfast hosted by our neighbors to the south, the First Baptist Church of Penfield.

It happens this coming Saturday Jan. 18 from 8 to 10 a.m. For $6 enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, real maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, and more. All January proceeds will go directly to help support Cameron Community Ministries, which provides emergency services, engagement, education and empowerment, offering after-school and summer programs, meals, an emergency pantry, and a clothing house.

The First Baptist Church of Penfield is located at 1862 Penfield Rd., steps from four corners.

Fun stuff at the library

The current exhibit gracing the main lobby is Photographers in our Midst, highlighting the work of 13 Webster photographers. It runs through January 31 and features images snapped by Joe Zelazny, Mike Donovan, Cathy Smith, Marcia Lewis, Dan Mack, Karen Soanes, Pamela Agliata, John Bustard, Ken Corpus, Larissa Mitchell, Lou Cardinale, and Laureen Anthony-Palmer and Barbara Sullivan.

Got all sorts of holiday photos and don’t know what to do with them? This coming Monday Jan. 20 from 6:30 to 7:30, learn how to use an online photo site to organize them and share them with family members.

The program, which runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. will also provide an overview of the main online photo sites and the organization tools they provide.  Registration is required.

And finally, get this great service the library now offers!

You can now get pick-up service for hold items at the front door. Just call the library when you arrive, library staff members will grab your items from the hold shelf, charge them to your account, print your receipt, and bring them to you.

What a great service if you have mobility issues or sleeping children in the car. (Or if the weather is stinky!)

The stories are still being told

WAHAS_11x17_PosterIf you haven’t stopped by the Webster Public Library yet to check out the We All Have a Story: The Stories Continue photography exhibit, I highly recommend you take the time to do so in the next few weeks.

The exhibit, created by local portrait photographer and Webster Central School District employee Linda Hayes, takes a closer look at the lives and stories of 21 WCSD staff members to help illuminate the people inside the classrooms and offices who work with our children every day. The stories are thought provoking, happy and sad. But more than anything else, they’ll probably make you think, “Wow, I never realized that.”

My story is among them. I tell my story about how three simple — but powerful — words a teacher spoke to me many years ago changed my life and inspired me to become a writer.

You will probably know at least one other of the participants, which also include:

It’s worth a few minutes to check them all out, so next time you’re at the library, take the time to do so. Or make a point to stop by before the exhibit closes.

The exhibit runs the entire month of December, and is open to the public during the library’s normal business hours, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 10 to 6, Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday from 1 to 4. (The library will be closed for the holidays on December 24, 25, and 31.)

The library is located at 980 Ridge Rd., its main entrance on Van Ingen Drive at the back of the plaza.

We all have a story — even your kids’ teachers

You know how sometimes children are surprised to learn that their teachers don’t live at school, don’t spend all their after-school hours in the classroom, and don’t ever have to go shopping at Wegmans?

Adults, of course, are more enlightened, but it’s still easy to assume that during the school year, teachers are almost entirely focused on their jobs and they otherwise lead rather humdrum, uninteresting lives.

WAHAS_11x17_PosterPhotographer Linda Hayes of Hayes Photography hopes to change that perception with her current exhibition, We All Have a Story: The Stories Continue. 

The exhibit, which will be on display at the Webster Public Library all next month, is a follow-up to Hayes’ first We All Have a Story exhibit in spring of 2018.

Hayes is a portrait photographer and Webster School District (WCSD) teaching assistant who has created images of 21 of her WCSD colleagues. Each staff member also submitted a narrative of his or her life story to share next to their photos.

The exhibit takes a closer look at the lives and stories of these WCSD staff members to help illuminate the people inside the classrooms and offices who work with our children every day. The stories are thought provoking, happy and sad. But more than anything else, they will probably make you think, “Wow, I never realized that.”

The exhibit, which runs the entire month of December, will be open to the public during the library’s normal business hours, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 10 to 6, Saturday from 10 to 5 and Sunday from 1 to 4. (The library will be closed for the holidays on December 24, 25, and 31.)

The public is invited to an opening reception on Tuesday Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Both the exhibit and reception are open to the public. The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road.

I’ll be at the reception; I’m pleased and honored to say that I’ve been included in this project. If you come to see the exhibit, you’ll read how three simple — but powerful — words changed my life, helped me realize my passion and convinced me to become a writer.

Library, Miracle Field are asking for your support

The very clever and very popular “Caps for Sale” fundraiser returns to the Webster Public Library later this month, to benefit the Friends of the Library.

The fundraiser is based on the popular children’s book of the same name, in which Bartholomew IMG_E9392Cubbins had 500 hats. There won’t be quite that many at this sale, but guaranteed you’ll find a beautiful selection, all hand-crafted by the Webster Library Sit and Stitch Group.

Adult hats will be sold for $10, and children’s for $5 Buy a hat for a gift, for yourself or to hang on the HOPE House’s mitten and hat tree in the lobby.

The sale is scheduled for Thursday November 14 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday November 16 from noon to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Webster Public Library and their programs.

A second fundraiser on Nov. 21 — a LuLaRoe pop-up boutique — will also benefit the Friends of the Library.

LuLaRoe sells simple, comfortable, unique clothing styles, including dresses, sweaters, leggings and t-shirts. You can shop that night and take your order home with you.

The sale will take place Thursday Nov. 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. At the same time, the Friends will host a meet-and-greet event, where new members and those wanting to know more about the Friends can come together at the library, share a treat and chat with other Friends.

Please join us For 2An extra-special art show, featuring children and adults with physical and developmental challenges, will be held Friday and Saturday Nov. 15 and 16 at CDS Life Transitions, 860 Hard Rd.

This is a great opportunity to take home a true original, with the added advantage of knowing that all proceeds will benefit Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester.

So. Much. Happening. At the library

Every once in a while I get an email or two from my friend Laureen over at the Webster Public Library, packed with listing of adult and youth events that are coming up over the next several weeks. I tell myself EVERY SINGLE TIME that I can’t possibly write about ALL of them.

And then I look more closely and see that they’re all really fun and creative programs that just need to be shared.

So here’s the latest batch. (At least most of them.)

Halloween party

If your kids aren’t totally sick of Halloween yet, the library has one more chance for them to celebrate, at their Halloween Party tomorrow, Friday Nov. 1.

Youths in grades 4-12 are invited from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for snacks, crafts, games, a costume contest, and more. Registration is required. Click here to do that.

Ever wonder what the library is like after it’s closed? Find out for yourself at an after-hours camp-out, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 15.

Bring pillows, blankets, and flashlights to build a fort and read together in the library at night. Library staff members will build a fire for your campsite, and have stories and s’mores for everyone.

Families are welcome. Registration is required. (Just once per family is fine.)

Breadtime stories

Kindness changes everything. That’s the theme of a unique story-time program by Chet Fery, the founder of an organization called Bread Time Stories and More.

Often called “The Bread Man,” Chet Fery began his hobby of baking and giving away bread more than 17 years ago. He promotes random acts of kindness, and believes the world can be changed “one loaf at a time; one act of kindness at a time.”

He estimates that he has given away more than 90,000 loaves of bread, created over 50 recipes, and generated more than 100 inspirational “Bread Time Stories” which he shares with audiences across the region.

At the program, Chet will share some of his Bread Time stories, conduct a bread-making lesson and provide each audience member with a loaf of bread and a recipe to take home.

Got your flu shot yet?

You should. It’s important, if not just for you, but for those around you whose health may be compromised.

The Webster Public Library will team up with Wegmans to offer a flu clinic on Tuesday Nov. 5 (election day) from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Bring your insurance card.

The Webster Art Club Annual Art Show will begin at the library this Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2. The opening reception and awards will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

There’s still time to get tickets for this Friday’s “Lift Your Spirits” fundraiser for the Webster Comfort Care Home, being held at Artisan Works, 565 Blossom Rd., from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The event will feature wine and beer tasting from local breweries, music by Andy Calabrese & Chet Catallo, appetizers, full cash bar, silent auction and raffles for great prizes including a balloon ride over Letchworth, a Sabres Suite for their Dec. 27 game against the Bruins, lodging, dinner certificates, rounds of golf, a humidor, jewelry, home decor and more.

Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased online here or by calling 585-872-5290.

The Webster Comfort Care Home, located at the corner of Holt and Klem roads, provides free hospice care to the terminally ill of our Webster community, and comfort to the patients’ families. The agency is run solely on donations and fundraisers like this.

The Webster Public Library will present a spooky — and educational — program this Thursday Oct. 17 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. called “The Spiritualist Movement in America.”

Local presenter Jack Kowiak will share the story of the Spiritualist movement which began long before the infamous Fox sisters, and continued long after them. It was the fastest growing belief system in American in the mid-19th century.

blood dropIf you didn’t get a chance to visit last week’s two-day Webster Community Blood Drive, don’t fret. Your next Webster-based opportunity to save some lives with your donation is coming up soon.

Our very own Webster Volunteer Fire Dept. will host a blood drive next Thursday Oct. 24, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the fire house, 35 South Ave. Click here to schedule an appointment online, or just stop by. It shouldn’t take more than an hour out of your day and will help fill a critical  need.

Speaking of our local fire departments, the West Webster Fire Dept. will host its annual Fire Prevention Open House this weekend, on Sunday Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the fire house on Gravel Rd.

The event features fire safety and rescue demonstrations, activities for the kids, and the opportunity to see all sorts of emergency equipment and trucks up close! Refreshments will be served, including apple cider, donuts, snow cones, and popcorn.

Webster community mailbag

This is a busy week coming up in Webster.

klem northFor starters, I just got a notice this morning from the folks over at Klem North Elementary, asking me to post this notice about an upcoming PTSA meeting.

As you can see, the meeting is scheduled for this Thursday at 6:30 in the library.

Please consider getting involved in your school’s PTSA if you aren’t already. They do so much to support our students and staff members — and as I one of those teachers, I speak from experience. Even if you can give an hour occasionally for a special event, that would be great.

This Thursday through Saturday (Oct. 10-12), the Friends of the Webster Library will host their fall used book sale at the library, 980 Ridge Rd., off Van Ingen Drive at the back of the plaza.

On Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., all hardcover books are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. AND Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. are Bag Days; $4 fills an entire bag with books.

And get this! You can even use your credit card. So make your way to the sale and stock up on books for the long winter ahead.

St. Rita School’s 35th annual Craft Sale returns this Saturday Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s time to start thinking about Christmas shopping, and with 100 vendors signed up this year, it’s a perfect opportunity.

There’s plenty of free parking, and there’s no admission. St. Rita School is located at 1008 Maple Drive in W. Webster.

October is domestic violence awareness month, so proceeds from this month’s Saturday Flapjack Community Breakfast at the First Baptist Church of Penfield will be donated to Resolve, an organization dedicated to intervening and preventing domestic and sexual violence against women.

The breakfast is scheduled for Saturday Oct. 19 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church, at Penfield’s four corners. For $6 per person, enjoy pancakes, pure maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, and beverages. The church is handicap accessible.

nick KThe Nick K 5K will be running its 6th annual event this Saturday Oct. 12 beginning at 8 a.m. at Webster Parks and Recreation, 1350 Chiyoda Drive.

Nicholas Kapusniak was killed on March 1, 2014 when a drive-by shooter fired into a group of college students in St. Louis, Missouri. Nick is a former resident of Webster and was attending school at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

The Nick K 5K hopes to draw attention to the violence that is becoming commonplace in our schools and cities. Part of the proceeds will go to local Crime Stoppers in Rochester and St. Louis, with the rest being put towards scholarships in his name at his high school in Waukesha, Wisconsin and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

Runners and walkers can register by clicking here. Cost is $25, and includes a t-shirt and other giveaways. Walk-up registrations will be accepted the morning of the race beginning at 7:15AM.

Lots of library news, including a new nature trail

Our Webster Public Library, in Webster Plaza, 980 Ridge Rd., always has a lot of great programs and special events on their calendar, but this one is especially great.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the brand new Hickory Bark Woods Trail will be officially introduced to the public at a grand opening ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. The trail is located on Van Ingen Drive, on the north side of the library, basically across from the front entrance. There’s a stand of woods there which you may not have really noticed before. Now it has a trail and boardwalk which lead to a platform which will be used for nature programs.

 

The project represents a joint community effort of the Webster Public Library, the Friends of the Webster Public Library, the Town of Webster, the Friends of Webster Trails, and the Boy Scouts to enhance a unique natural area for the benefit of Webster residents.

Come on out that Saturday and check out the town’s newest trail!

In other library news,

Bring the whole family to learn about Bees in Your Backyard on Wed. October 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library’s community room.

Participants will learn how fresh honey is good for you, see a beehive and taste fresh honey. The program is free but registration is requested.

ikebanaLearn about Ikebana (ee-kay-bah-nah), the Japanese art of flower arrangement, on Friday Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This fascinating program, presented by the School of Ichivo Ikebana, demonstrates this disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It’s steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.

Live demonstrations will be held on Friday at 1 and 4 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It all happens in the library’s community room.

The Friends of the Webster Public Library Fall Book Sale begins Thursday, Oct. 10 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 12.

Hardcover books are just $1, paperbacks only 50 cents, and all books are new to the sale. Credit cards are accepted. Stop in to check out the selection of books on cooking, gardening, hobbies, biographies, religion, history, sports, travel, performing arts, large print, humor and more. And make sure to enter the raffle for gift baskets packed with books.

The sale will run on Thursday, Oct 10 from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (fill a bag for just $4); and Saturday Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (the bag sale will continue). All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Public Library

Speaking of the Friends, here’s a way to help them out while doing your fall housecleaning.

On Saturday Oct. 19, the Friends will sponsor a fundraising event at the Webster Savers, 980 Ridge Rd. Bring your gently used items to the rear of Savers near the library parking lot between 10 a.m. and noon. Soft goods such as clothing, bedding, towels, curtains, backpacks, hats, mittens, ties, socks, scarves and purses will find a new home here.  Hard goods such as small electrical items, toaster, hair dryers, curling irons, coffee makers, mixers, toys, games, stuffed animals, puzzles, sports equipment, knick-knacks, jewelry, baskets, ornaments, hand tools, dishes, glassware, cutlery, pots and pans are also welcome.

Savers will make a donation to the Friends based on how many items are received.

Finally, here’s a great program for anyone who has found themselves in the role of caregiver.

A six-week educational program will focus on the needs of family caregivers of individuals living with chronic conditions. It will help caregivers develop self-help tools to reduce stress, communicate more effectively, deal with challenging feelings and more.

Classes meet at the library from 5:30 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Nov. 19. The program is free but registration is required; call the library at 585-872-7075 ext. 3 to sign up.

Webster mailbag and BIKE RACK NEWS!

Three Barry’s Runners — Mike Bodine, Don White and Jim Mossey — with the new bike rack, installed this week on West Main. 

The Village of Webster is finally getting its bike racks!

They’ve been more than a year in coming. It was last June that I approached the Village Board with a proposal to install some bike racks to make our village more cyclist-friendly. The idea came out of a discussion I was having with a running buddy at our weekly Barry’s Runners group. Many of the group members bring their bikes to the run and they usually end up crowded along the Barry’s Pub fence.

Not any more. Just this week, our village Public Works Department installed the first new bike rack on the sidewalk in front of Barry’s Pub/The Garage Sale Store on West Main. It’s the first of what will eventually be four racks. The other three will be placed at Veterans’ Park, Village Hall, and somewhere down in the Village Bakery parking lot (where exactly is yet to be determined).

Thank you to our Superintendent of Public Works Jake Swingly and his staff for getting this done. I truly believe that the new bike racks will make our already friendly and welcoming village even more so.

Now on to a few mailbag notices:

The Webster Public Library will host a blood drive on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the library’s community room.

Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also make an appointment by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. The Red Cross is still trying to make up for summer shortages, so please consider taking an hour out of your day and help save some lives.

motorThe Webster Museum and Historical Society invites the community to an open house on Saturday Sept. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m.

If you have never visited our village museum before, this will be a great opportunity to check out all of the permanent and rotating exhibits.

The focus this weekend will me “motoring,” with exhibits inside and outside. There will be vintage cars and an antique tractor, and the big-wheeled penny farthing bicycle.  Ed Harding will show some of the Native American artifacts he’s found in his yard, you can learn about fossils, play some colonial games, make some butter and more.

Refreshments will be served.

It’s going to be great fun for the whole family, and (don’t tell the kids) educational, to boot. Plus it’s all free.

St. Rita School will be hosting a Sticky Lips fundraiser on Saturday Sept. 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school, 1008 Maple Rd. in Webster.

On the menu that night will be BBQ chicken (leg and thigh), pulled pork, fresh cornbread, two homemade sides as well as a coupon for a free appetizer card when you visit the restaurant.

Tickets can be bought ahead of time through the school’s website (click on the online giving tab where you can place your order) or you can purchase tickets directly at the school. See that attached flyer for more details.

Webster community mailbag

Drumming your way to good health

This looks really cool.

Folks at the Webster Public Library are introducing their new health and wellness series with a very interesting event.

Two african Djembe Drum on white background.Two Herons Drum Circle from Geneva will visit the library on Saturday Sept. 14 to present — well, a drum circle — from 3 to 4 p.m.

What the heck is a drum circle, you may ask. I did too, so I checked Two Herons’ Facebook page, where they describe a drum circle as a “unique, interactive community drumming experience.”

They go on to say that regular participation in drumming classes,

Reduces tension, anxiety and stress; Helps control chronic pain; Boosts the immune system; Creates a sense of connectedness with self and others; Helps us experience being in resonance with the natural rhythms of life; Releases negative feelings, blockages and emotional trauma; (and) Provides a medium for individual self-realization.

Okay. In any case, it sounds like a lot of fun.

The program is designed for adults and teens. Drums and other percussion equipment will be provided or you can bring your own. Registration is required at www.websterlibrary.org 

You’ll also want to check the library’s website for some other really neat programs they’ve got planned this month, including

  • A do-it-yourself Marbled Coaster Tiles craft project for teens and adults on Monday Sept. 16
  • A Love Your Library celebration in honor of National Library Card Sign-up Month with snacks, games, crafts, and a photo booth on Saturday Sept. 21.

Plus, the library is collecting new and gently used coats through October 6, which will be distributed at the Project Homeless Connect Rochester event, being held at the Blue Cross Arena on October 15.

An update from the Village Quilt Shoppe

The Village Quilt Shoppe has settled in quite nicely at 21 East Main St. and is gearing up for its grand opening in just a few weeks.

It’s scheduled for Sept. 13 and 14, and owners Monique and Vanetta promise a “great party” with food, raffles and much more. Stay tuned for more details about that.quilt shoppe logo

In the meantime, Monique and Vanetta have all sorts of special events in the works, including their Embroidery Block of the month series beginning in September, and a bird cage quilt or table runner class. 

The first weekend of every month the shop will host a “Weekend Retreat” with a different project every month, and the monthly “Sunday Embroidery Tea” gives quilters a chance to learn new stitches and perfect those you already use. The second Saturday of the month is “Quilters Anonymous Night,” and “Open Sew Friday” is another chance to gather with friends old and new to work on your projects.

Electronics recycling opportunity

Got some old unused or broken electronics kicking around your garage that you don’t know what to do with? 

Take them over to the Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Xerox (take Phillips Rd. to Caracas Dr.).

Items which can be accepted include:

  • computers and accessories
  • TVs and monitors (limit of two per vehicle)
  • electronicstelephones and answering machines
  • microwaves
  • IT storage devices, cables and accessories
  • printers, scanners and accessories
  • gaming devices
  • routers and servers
  • office copiers and fax machines
  • stereo, video and audio equipment
  • other small electronics such as mobile devices
  • most small home appliances (no freon)

Eating good in the neighborhood

Breakfast and dinner are on the menu on Saturday Sept. 21.

If you really don’t feel much like cooking breakfast that morning, you can hop on over to the First Baptist Church of Penfield for their first Flapjack Saturday Fundraiser of the season.

From 8 to 10 a.m., enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, and more for just $6 per person. All proceeds will benefit Penfield Hope, an agency which offers emergency financial assistance, non-perishable food, diapers, children’s clothing, and more to Penfield neighbors in need.

The First Baptist Church of Penfield is located at 1862 Penfield Rd., at the four corners.

That evening, let St. Martin Lutheran Church, 813 Bay Rd. in Webster, make dinner for you at their fall BBQ and FunFest.

From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. you can get a half chicken, salt potatoes, cole slaw, roll, butter and beverage for $10 per person. Pie slices and other desserts will also be available for purchase. A hot dog dinner for kids is $2. Kids will also enjoy a bounce house, face painting and balloons.
