Calling the Webster Schroeder Class of 1977

class of 77The time is drawing near for the Webster Schroeder Class of 1977’s 40th reunion, and if that means you, you’re going to want to get your tickets soon.

Plans are for a picnic at Webster Park on Sunday July 16, catered by Bad to the Bone Barbecue. A wide variety of craft and mainstream brews will be provided by The Beverage Center in Canandaigua, a store owned by classmate Carlo Jannotti. (There will be plenty of other beverage choices as well for anyone who doesn’t like beer.)

A lot of your classmates have already signed up, but there are still a lot of “missing” ones. So organizers are asking everyone to log onto the event Facebook page to find out who’s on that list and see if you can help track them down. Former teachers are also encouraged to attend.

Mini Webster mailbag

Just a few interesting notes this morning.

For starters, Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas high schools will both have new assistant principals next year.

Karen Murray has accepted the position as assistant principal (alpha M-R) for Webster Thomas High School’s Gold House, effective July 1. Murray is replacing current interim assistant principal Jeremy Slack.

Murray, a Webster resident and graduate, previously served as a middle school ELA teacher and literacy specialist at both Spry and Willink middle schools. She also was a high school literacy specialist at Webster Thomas HS.

 

Dan Sepka will be the new assistant principal (alpha A-E) for Webster Schroeder High School, also effective July 1, replacing current interim assistant principal Jim Vitale.

Sepka is currently an integrated co-teacher at Spry Middle School and prior to that, worked for 10 years at State Road Elementary School as a consultant teacher.
He has spent his entire teaching career in Webster CSD as a co-teacher in all subject areas, and has been a Warrior varsity assistant coach since 2005.  He is also a graduate of Webster Schroeder HS and a Webster resident.

The Webster Parks and Recreation Department has asked me to remind everyone about their great summer camp programs.

Right now is the time to sign up for programs to keep your kids active and entertained this summer. The Rec offers both full-day camps for children ages kindergarten through 5th grade, and fun camps for teenagers.

In full-day camp, kids are grouped by grade and rotate through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Campers will also enjoy several field trips to miniature golf, Seabreeze, bowling, movies ad more.

The Fun Camps will take teenagers to a new exciting destination every dayfrom ice skating to RocVenture, a baseball game to paintball.

The Rec also offers a preschool camp for children ages 3 to 5, and half-day fun camp for kids in kindergarten through 3rd grade.

opioidThe Monroe County Legislature and the school district are teaming up for a very important presentation on May 31 to raise awareness about the rising threat of opioid abuse in our community.

The presentation will be held Wednesday May 31 at 7 pm at the Webster Community Center, 1350 Chiyoda Drive. Click on the poster for more information.

SEPTA Bowling fundraiser a success

Webster’s 6th annual SEPTA (Special Education Parent/Teacher Association) scholarship fundraiser, held on Sunday April 9 at AMF Empire Lanes, was a terrific success. Despite being a beautiful, warm spring day, 100 bowlers spent the day indoors instead of teeing off on the golf course or grilling outside.

The event was coordinated by Thomas special education teacher Dina Malboeuf, who provided this follow-up report.

In addition to the bowlers and business sponsors, special education staff members from both Webster Thomas and Schroeder High Schools participated by volunteering at the registration and raffle tables, bringing in teams of their own, and gathering spectacular prizes for the raffles.

The afternoon was filled with fun, creativity (some teams dressed up in costumes), team spirit (teams consisted of families, friends, and/or colleagues from various departments), food, awards, and overall unique talent demonstrated on the lanes! It was so nice to see community members and district staff come together to support a great cause: raising scholarship money for students who participate in the special education program in Webster.

The event was a great success, raising more than $4,000. Malbeouf would like to send out a special thank you to the following people:

Event organizers are currently reviewing scholarship applicants from both high schools, and are already looking forward to making next year’s fundraiser tournament even more fun and more successful.

What can I say about Community Arts Day that I haven’t already said?

It was another successful event put on by a wonderful group of volunteers who worked hard all day to welcome people with a smile, serve them great food, and basically provide a whole day of great family fun.

I tried to get a lot of photos, of course. But I’m sure I missed a lot, because so much was happening every minute of the day. And there was SO MUCH artwork to see!

As is often the case, some news from the schools to lead off today’s mailbag.

Webster Thomas presents Aida

Don’t forget about next weekend’s production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida, presented by the Webster Thomas Players.

Here’s the synopsis:

At the Nile’s edge, the enslaved Nubian princess, Aida becomes romantically entangled with shirt expandedthe Egyptian captain, Radames, who is betrothed to the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneris. As their forbidden love grows deeper, Aida is forced to find balance between her heart’s yearning for Radames, and her responsibility to lead her people.

Based on the opera by Giuseppe Verdi, Elton John and Time Rice’s Aida is a timeless love story, featuring an award-winning pop/rock score from the seasoned pop duo who brought musical life to Disney’s The Lion King. Rousing rock numbers and heart-wrenching ballads bring the ill-fated lovers into a new era.

The show will be presented in four performances, at 7:30 p.m. April 6, 7 and 8, and a 2 p.m. matinee on April 8.

Meet the Easter Bunny at the pool!

Here’s some great fun for the kids at the Aquatic Center as Easter approaches:

The Easter Bunny will be stopping by the Aquatic Center on Friday April 7 from 6 to 8 pm to visit during the center’s annual floating Easter egg hunt. Weighted and floating eggs will be scattered throughout the shallow end of the pool. Kids can swim, waddle or walk to gather eggs and then trade them for prizes.

Of course, children will also get a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny.

There’s no charge for WAC members. WCSD staff members pay $3 per child, and nonmembers pay $6 per child, with a family maximum of $12. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and can arrive anytime between 6 and 7 pm.

College Night returns April 26

Have a student headed off to college in a few years? You might want to check out this upcoming program.

Webster Thomas and Webster Schroeder high school counselors will host College Night for families of sophomores and juniors on Wednesday, April 26, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Webster Schroeder Auditorium.

The speakers will be David Roberts, associate director of freshman admissions at Saint John Fisher College, and Angela Wesley, admissions adviser at State University of New York at Brockport. Both bring tremendous experience and insight into topics of concern as you navigate the college admissions process. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Getting in and staying in college: SUNY vs private colleges; letters of recommendation; the common application; essays, the new SAT and ACT, and other admissions criteria.
  • Essential skills needed for moving on after high school graduation: resilience, perseverance, collaboration, integrity, time-management, self-management, and communication.

There will be plenty of time for questions and answers throughout.

Students are welcome to attend with their parents. Webster Schroeder High School is located at 875 Ridge Road.

Community Arts Day seeks talent

Webster’s Community Arts Day is a celebration of our district’s talented students.

Your kids got talent? Encourage them to strut their stuff at the next Community Arts Day, Saturday April 8 at Webster Schroeder High School.

More to come about Community Arts Day itself, but for now let’s talk about the “Webster’s Got Talent” talent show, which is always a big draw.

It’s scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. on Community Arts Day, and singers, dancers and musicians are all encouraged to participate. All you have to do is register by visiting  www.websterptsa.org/talentshow, then start getting your act ready. Plan to arrive by 1:45 p.m. to review the performance line-up schedule.

If you’ve never been to Community Arts Day, make sure to put this annual family-friendly event on your calendar right now.

The event celebrates the many artistic and musically talented students in our schools. Samples of artwork from every school in the district will be on display, and entertainment by dance troupes, martial arts schools, music groups and more are scheduled throughout the day. The entire first floor of the school is packed with performers, artwork, and community displays. There’s a children’s area with crafts, baked goods and refreshments, and plenty more for kids to do.

Admission to Community Arts Day is free. Proceeds from food, craft, and kids’ activities will benefit cultural arts programs within the Webster Central School District.  For more information, visit the Community Arts Day website.

High school musicals just around the corner

It’s high school musical time in Webster, and our schools have two blockbusters on tap.

Program Ad Mary PoppinsWebster Schroeder will present the supercalifragilistic musical Mary Poppins at 7:30 p.m. March 30 and 31, and at 2 pm. and 7:30 p.m. on April 1. The drama club actually hired a company from Las Vegas to help the actors playing Mary Poppins and Bert fly through the air.

If you’re not familiar with the plot (really?), here’s a synopsis:

The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

2016 Reflections Contest winners advance to state level

The PTSA Reflections contest is in full swing in anticipation of this year’s Community Arts Day celebration on April 8 at Webster Schroeder High School. Hopefully  there are a lot of students out there working diligently to prepare their creative entries, based on this year’s theme, “Within Reach.”   (Learn more about Community Arts Day and the Reflections competition by clicking here.) Entries are being accepted through March 15.

But coincidentally (or perhaps not), I just receive notification about some of LAST year’s Reflections winners, 13 of whom who have advanced to the state level for judging.

The press release goes on to say,

The theme for the 2016-17 Reflections program was “What is Your Story?” WCSD students had their artwork recognized as the Best of Show in their categories and age divisions at the district level. Their artwork progressed to the Genesee Valley Region PTSA level of the competition and was judged against entries from other schools in the region. Before Christmas GVRPTSA held a ceremony to announce the winners, whose artwork now moves on to the New York State level for judging.

Representing WCSD are: Taisia Badulescu, Katherine Kovacs, Olivia Rye, Riley Dieter, Anthony Randazzo, Amanda Longhenry, Sydney DeZutter, Annabelle Sero, Rachael Dioguardi, Jane Bradstreet, Kaitlyn Dushuk, Sean Devlin, and Emily Hansen. Their entries range from literature to visual arts and photography to music composition and film production. The students themselves range from prekindergarten to high school.

The Reflections Committee expects to hear the results of this stage of the competition sometime in April.

Congratulations to these students, and good luck! You make Webster proud.

Vote for the Warrior Crew NOW!

You may recall a few days ago when I posted a blog about Webster Schroeder’s Warrior Crew. That’s what the school’s uber-peppy student fan section calls itself. Last year the Crew took first place in the annual New York State Public High School Athletic Association “Battle of the Fans” competition, which recognizes top student cheering sections.

Well, the contest is on again and the Crew is once again a finalist, hoping to become the contest’s first-ever back-to-back winners.

Voting is now in progress and only runs through noon tomorrow (Friday). I’m told that it’s a pretty tight race right now, so every vote counts.

The Warrior Crew needs our help

I received a very well-written and impassioned email the other day from a representative of the Warrior Crew, Webster Schroeder’s student fan section.

This completely student-run pep squad shows up at Schroeder sports contests, cheering on the teams with an unparalleled energy and volume. And that’s not just an opinion — the Crew actually came in first place last year in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association “Battle of the Fans” competition, which recognizes top student cheering sections.

Believe it or not, they have a chance to win that contest again this year, and be the first-ever back-to-back Battle of the Fans champions.

The Warrior Crew has been named a finalist in the 2016-2017 competition, and NYSPHSAA judges visited the school recently, during the school’s basketball game against Bishop Kearney. “It was a fantastic experience, and we think the judges had just as much fun as we did,” the email said.

But now comes the hard part: getting the votes, as the eloquent emailer pointed out.

“Although we feel that the Warrior Crew impressed many people, and also proved that it is still the best in New York, this battle does not come down to a decision from the judges… We deserve to win again and become the first ever back-to-back Battle of the Fans Champions, but we need your help in order to accomplish this goal. The representatives from NYSPHSAA will post a picture for all four finalists on three different forms of social media: Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Each “like” on those posts is equivalent to one vote cast for that school. The student section with the most votes wins.”

The Crew is asking that, once the links are posted, everybody go online and on Instagram and cast a vote by “liking” the Webster Schroeder entry.  Voting will start this Wednesday, February 15 at noon, and end on Friday at noon. Stay posted to my blog and I’ll let you know what the links are as soon as I find out.

I would be remiss if I stopped there. The email went on to give some background on the Warrior Crew and how they have expanded their focus from sports to the entire school community and beyond.

We pride ourselves on dedicated support of our classmates. We have created an awesome family atmosphere over the years, which, these days, is rare at high schools. We are proud of the fact that we are able to unite all aspects of our school into one Crew. We draw from rich tradition, but also innovate and improve each year. Last year, we were named NYSPHSAA “Battle of the Fans” champions after our senior leadership culminated their high school careers with the remarkable feat of uniting our school like never before.

This year, we have continued the traditions of being loud, positive, and supportive at athletic events, but also branched off into other areas within the school (music, technology, art, etc.), and even in the community. We strive for having a great time cheering on our Warriors, inclusion, unity, and constant support of others. With these goals in mind, and using our great platform as reigning NYS champions, we launched the “Warrior Crew Cares” campaign this past Fall. Through a t-shirt fundraiser we were able to support other teens at the Rochester Center for Youth. Just as important as our donation to the Center, were the ideas about the importance of giving to others that spread through our school after that.
