Upcoming fundraisers to benefit Webster Comfort Care Home

28 Dec

Today I’d like to highlight the Webster Comfort Care Home (WCCH) and a few fundraisers this great agency will be holding over the next several weeks.

The first is something I mentioned a few days ago in my mailbag, the very popular “12 Months of Flowers” promotion, held in conjunction with Kittelberger Florist. Buy a card for just $50, and present it every month at Kittelberger, 263 North Ave. to receive one fresh bouquet every month.

It’s a great way to treat yourself or a friend, and all proceeds will benefit the Comfort Care Home.

Cards can be purchased from Jan. 5 to 26, with cash, check or credit card and can be picked up at the Webster Comfort Care Home, 700 Holt Rd. For more information, click here.

The next event is what the WCCH calls their “Souper Bowl.” For just $15, you can order a quart of delicious soup, prepared by one of 11 different local restaurants and shops. Your choices are:

  • Jambalaya, provided by the Filling Station
  • Seafood Bisque, provided by Pub 235
  • Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Bisque, provided by Pub 235
  • Chicken and Rice with Spinach (GF), provided by BC’s Chicken Coop
  • White Chicken Chili, provided by Flaherty’s Three Flags Inn
  • Creamy Mushroom Truffle, provided by Brimont Bistro
  • French Onion (Vegan), provided by Spirit and Abundance
  • San Marzano Tomato Basil with Sourdough Croutons, provided by Dough Boyz ROC
  • Broccoli Cheddar, provided by Annette’s Restaurant
  • Italian Wedding Soup, provided by Mama Lor’s
  • Buffalo Chicken, provided by the Main Dive
  • Chicken Quesadilla, provided by The Nutcracker

For another $5, you can even add four dinner rolls from Proietti’s to your order. And for just $5 more, you can add two oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip cookies. So basically, you can get an entire delicious meal for just $25, while supporting the Comfort Care Home at the same time.

PLUS, order five or more quarts and you’ll be entered to win a one-hour massage at Wellness 360.

Souper Bowl 2026 is pre-order–only, from Dec. 29 through Feb. 2. Orders must be received by Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. and can be picked up on Saturday, February 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at Webster Presbyterian Church, 550 Webster Rd. Click here for more information and to order.

Quantities are limited on many varieties, so be sure to order early!

Webster community mailbag

19 Nov

Let’s start today’s mailbag with this quick note about something happening REALLY SOON that will interest those who want to get some Christmas shopping done.

Maplewood Nursing Home will be hosting their annual Holiday Bazaar this Thursday and Friday Nov. 20 and 21.

It will feature nine vendors offering one-of-a-kind items including home goods, crafts, jewelry, knitwear, wind chimes, and much more. Plus there will be a bake sale, two raffles and an ornament donation tree. All proceeds will benefit Lap Robes for Veterans, a charity near and dear to The Maplewood; the organization donates homemade lap robes to all military veterans at the facility.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The Maplewood is located at 100 Daniel Drive in the Village of Webster. There’s plenty of free parking. This is a community event and all are welcome.

The Women’s Club of Webster has announced details for their 31st annual Holiday Cookie Sale, scheduled this year for Saturday, Dec. 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Webster Public Library, 980 Ridge Rd. Cost for cookies is $10 per pound (cash only!). They usually sell out very quickly, so get there early.

Proceeds from the sale, which is eagerly awaited by area cookie lovers, will benefit the club’s scholarship funds as well as many other programs in the Webster community.

AND while we’re talking about the Women’s Club, you’ll want to make plans now to attend the club’s December meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 18 at the Penfield Country Club.

Santa will be the special guest at the luncheon, so this is your chance to ask him all those questions you’ve ever wondered about, like what his favorite cookies are and who pulls his beard the most. Mrs. Claus will also be with him.

The meeting will be held at the Penfield Country Club, 1784 Jackson Rd. It begins with social time at 11:30 a.m., followed by the meeting at noon and lunch at 12:30. Cost is $25 and includes lunch, either Chicken French, a Reuben or Italian Melt sandwich. All lunches also come with fresh fruit and beverages. Send your check made out to WCW with your lunch choice by Dec. 11 to Carolyn Rittenhouse, 405 County Line Rd, Ontario, NY 14519. If you think your check might be late, call Carolyn at 585-265-1303 to hold your place.

From the Webster CSD:

Families with children residing in their household who are ages birth to 5 years old are asked to help Webster CSD forecast enrollment by completing the brief Young Children Census.

You can complete the survey online at the Webster CSD website or here on an online form. It will only take a few minutes. Deadline is January 6.

This census is a young family’s first connection with the district and helps the school district keep in touch with the family as their child approaches school age. When families share their email address with Webster CSD through the census, it enables the district to notify those families when their children are eligible for prekindergarten and kindergarten registration.

The raffle will be live through Thursday Dec. 18, when the winners will be chosen.

Here’s another reminder that Country Gardeners of Webster will hold their annual Garden Club Holiday Sale on Saturday December 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Webster Recreation Center, 1350 Chiyoda Drive. Their Light Shines at Webster Comfort Care honored the memories of loved ones

10 Oct

I wasn’t able to attend this year’s Their Light Shines memorial luminaria gathering at the Webster Comfort Care Home (WCCH) on Thursday night, but I understand it was as poignant as always, and very well attended.

WCCH executive director Julianne Groff estimated that more than 100 people attended and said they’d sold around 220 luminaria, the most ever. When they were all artfully arranged on the grounds, the illuminated bags made a beautiful and deeply moving sight. The event also featured a slide show with the name of everyone who has ever been a resident at the home, a fire in the home’s new fire pit (built by Eagle Scout Connor Madison), and homemade baked goods.

The evening’s speakers included Jessica Orchard, whose grandfather, Webster Volunteer firefighter Ron Orchard, was a resident in the summer of 2022, who spoke on behalf of her family. Following Jessica’s remarks, Julianne welcomed the attendees, thanking the volunteers and especially thanking the residents’ families for trusting the Webster Comfort Care Home for allowing them to help with their loved ones’ journeys.

In her remarks, Julianne said,

Here at the Home, we are given the profound privilege of walking alongside individuals and families during one of life’s most sacred chapters. We see love in its purest form: in quiet bedside moments, in the clasp of a hand, in a whispered goodbye, in the resilience of families who show up day after day, heart wide open.

Each person we remember today brought something unique into the world — a laugh, a story, a strength, a lesson. And although they are no longer with us in body, their spirit lingers in all the ways they shaped the lives around them. We carry their legacies forward — not only through memories, but through the love they gave and the lessons they taught us.

To the families and loved ones gathered here: we see your grief. We honor it. We also see your courage. The care, the time, the tenderness you gave in their final days — that was love in action. You did your best. And that mattered. To our staff and volunteers: thank you. You do sacred work. And even when it feels invisible, it is never forgotten. What you give at the end of life echoes far beyond it.

Tonight, as we remember those we’ve lost, let us also reflect on what they taught us — about grace, about dignity, and about how precious each moment truly is. Let us remember them not with just sadness, but with deep gratitude for having known them.

In closing, I invite each of you to hold a memory in your heart — a smile, a story, a moment of love — and let it be a light that stays with you.

Here’s a full slideshow of photos from the evening. Many thanks to “Jet” Thomas for all of these photos.

Their light shines at Webster Comfort Care

29 Sep

Webster Comfort Care Home will be hosting a very special event on Oct. 7 which will give you and yours a chance to remember someone special who has passed away. It’s called “Their Light Shines,” a memorial luminaria gathering to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones we carry in our hearts.

For this beautiful evening of remembrance, participants are invited to purchase a luminaria and personalize it in honor of a loved one. On the evening of Tuesday Oct. 7, they’ll all be placed around the Comfort Care Home’s parking lot, and at sunset, they’ll all be lit. It makes for a very powerful and moving scene.

After a brief welcome at 7 p.m., light refreshments will be served and music provided by the Threshold Singers.

Each luminaria costs $20. To purchase yours, log onto www.webstercomfortcare.org. Even if you can’t attend, consider purchasing luminaria to honor your loved ones. That way, their light will shine even if you can’t be there.

Webster Comfort Care Home (WCCH), located at the corner of Holt and Klem roads, provides free hospice care to the terminally ill of our Webster community. The dedicated staff members and volunteers there uphold the dignity and ease the suffering of its residents, while supporting their loved ones in a warm, home-like atmosphere.

Webster community mailbag

29 Aug

Just a few events in today’s mailbag … We’ll lead with this item I just received today from the United Church of Christ on Klem Rd.

They’re hosting a special performance titled “They Live On…in Word and Song to Support Mental Health,” on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. The community program will support those in various stages of caregiving and loss.

“They Live On…in Word and Song” features excerpts from Patricia Nugent’s memoir — They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad –paired with nine original songs by singer/songwriter Michael Jerling.

Nugent has presented widely on the topics of caregiving and loss. A native of Irondequoit, her mother Amelia Nugent was active in local politics and real estate, and her father Nicholas Nugent was Athletic Director at the Rochester School for the Deaf. Michael Jerling of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. has been described as a “songwriter’s songwriter…an artist who performs his songs with an uncommon ability to deliver them with power and grace.”

This collaboration between two artists employing two different forms of creative expression gives voice to the universal human experience of letting go. The performance initially debuted at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs to a sold-out room. This is their first performance in the Rochester area.

The performance will be held at the United Church of Christ, 570 Klem Rd. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served immediately after the performance. A CD of the readings and music will also be made available at the event. Tickets are $20, a donation to the church’s mission of supporting mental health awareness and education. Click here to get yours. For more information, email office@uccwebster.org.

Menu choices for the luncheon include: Chef’s Dip (beef, onions, provolone, lettuce and tomato on French bread), Chicken Waldorf Sandwich (chicken salad, apples, candied walnuts,  grapes, melted Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato on a croissant) or House Salad (greens, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber). All choices include hot and cold drinks and French fries.

Bonus community mailbag

22 Mar

One of the benefits of being an entirely digital publication is that I can offer a rapid response for organizations who could use a hand getting the word out about an event or special offering. Today, I’m pleased to provide that service to two of my favorite local agencies, the Webster Comfort Care Home and the Webster Museum.

First, this extra shout-out for what promises to be a very fun evening of desserts and dancing.

The Webster Comfort Care Home is hosting an 80’s Prom and Dance Party on Saturday April 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Shadow Lake Golf Club, 1850 Five Mile Line Rd.

This is a great opportunity to celebrate a night on the town with your special gal or guy, complete with appetizers, desserts, a basket raffle and 50/50 raffle. There’ll be contests for Best Dressed and Most Original, and the King and Queen of the Prom will be crowned. You can even pre-order a corsage or boutonniere from Kittleberger’s, which you can pick up when you get to the dance.

Live entertainment for the evening will be provided by Hall Pass and DJ Lesh.

You remember how much fun your prom was! How about re-living that carefree time? And if you didn’t get to go to your prom, here’s your chance! Tickets are $60 each or two for $100, and the first 20 guests get a VIP bag of goodies. You can also purchase a package of eight tickets for $450, which includes a beautifully decorated table reserved just for you and your friends, and eight drink tickets.

Click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Let’s make this a huge success for the Comfort Care Home, because they do so much for our community. They rely on community support to fulfill its mission of providing free hospice care for our terminally ill Webster neighbors.

Next, the Webster Museum would like to remind you about all of the great educational opportunities that await you there for you and your children.

If you have never visited our Webster Museum, located at 18 Lapham Park in the Village of Webster, you might not realize that — when you’re there — you can:

  • discover evidence that mammoths wandered your neighborhood thousands of years ago
  • experience math and reading lessons in a one-room schoolhouse
  • see stone tools and weapons designed b Native Americans who might have camped in your yard
  • stroll down a typical Main Street featuring businesses of the early 1900s
  • visit multiple displays and observe how our daily living has changed

Guided group tours are provided on request for teachers, parents and Scout leaders. The docents there are even prepared to adjust the tour to meet your curriculum goals. To schedule a tour, call Jill Kraft at 585 -507-1908 (for school and Scout tours) or Sharon Pratt at 585 -766-7101 (for adult tours).

Visit the Webster Museum website to find out more specific information about everything the museum has to offer, including examples of the exhibits. And remember that the exhibits change seasonally, so make sure to stop back often.
