Can you help? The Senior Singers need a new director

I’ve written several times about the Senior Singers, an enthusiastic group of older adults who meet once a week at the Webster Recreation Center to sing, socialize and perform community concerts.

For the past many years, this fabulous vocal group has been led by Sylvia Vazzana, who recently decided to retire from that volunteer position. So the Recreation Center is hoping there’s someone out there who’d be interested in taking over.

The commitment is not huge. Right now the group meets every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the Rec Center. Four times a year they perform a community concert/sing-a-long, featuring Broadway tunes, old standards, and Christmas carols for the holidays. There are currently about 20 to 25 members in the group, and they’re supported by a wonderful accompanist. They have lots of fun, and they love sharing their music with the community. As one member said, “We old folk love to sing!”

The Rec Center would like to find someone as soon as possible to fill the role, especially since the next season is scheduled to start Sept. 15. They’d be happy to work with the new director if the current time and day are a challenge. CA Consulting named Webster Chamber Business of the Month

Congratulations to CA Consulting, honored as the September 2026 Business of the Month by the Webster Chamber of Commerce. The business was recognized at the Chamber of Commerce’s most recent Monthly Meeting, held Friday Aug. 28 at the Webster Golf Club.

CA Consulting — owned and operated by Cheryl Adas and based on Webster — is a professional consulting firm that specializes in leadership development, team effectiveness, and professional coaching.

Cheryl formed her DBA in 1991 when she started consulting for various organizations in customer service. Her family had recently relocated from Chicago to her hometown of Webster. Consulting became a part-time gig when she became the General Manager of the Courtyard in Brighton in 1994 and then began her career at Xerox in 1997.

It was more than 25 years later when Cheryl decided to leave Xerox and put her consulting career into action, providing leadership training, team effectiveness, and Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement processes. She knew there were opportunities using all the skills and experience she’d acquired over the years.

Her vision for her company became “Unleashing the Power of People with Momentum,” building confidence and helping people realize their untapped, unlimited potential. Cheryl works with both start-up and well-established organizations to help them build leaders at all levels and build critical thinkers in continuous process improvement.

Cheryl loves making a difference in people’s lives, helping them to see the best in themselves and achieve their potential. Her business is primarily marketed via word of mouth and the support of her MCC Economic and Workforce Development partnership. Cheryl has helped participants realize they were leaders leave her program with their heads held high and more confidence and pep in their step. She’s helped people with challenging personal lives thinking they couldn’t spend the time in the program who found it to be lifechanging in a positive way.

In addition to being an active Webster Chamber member, Cheryl also participates in the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Roc Dog Therapy with her five-year-old Golden Retriever Finn, and the Wellness on Wednesdays senior group. She was a former board trustee and co-chair at Sonnenberg Gardens and a former vice president and board member of the Port Bay Improvement Association.

The Webster Chamber of Commerce Events and Honors Committee presents a Business of the Month award to one of their member businesses at each of their monthly breakfast meetings. Fewer than 3% of the members are chosen annually.

So how was YOUR night?

Wednesday night’s storms were no joke. The severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches (and then warnings in some places) weren’t kidding this time. Rarely during these events do I lose power (thank you Village of Webster) and have little damage aside from small branches, twigs and leaves littering the yard.

Wednesday night, though, we weren’t so lucky.

I was sitting on my enclosed front porch with a few friends, sipping some wine and watching the lightning, when the power went out. Didn’t bother me; when that happens it’s usually only for a short time, and in the meantime it’s like camping. But, shortly thereafter, we heard a huge crash come from beside my garage. Seems that one of our trees had decided to make an unannounced visit to my neighbor’s roof.

A few of us ran outside to assess the situation, which proved somewhat difficult in the still-driving rain. Sure enough, our really big white pine had become uprooted, and much of it was resting atop our neighbor’s house. As adults do, we reconvened on the porch to discuss the ramifications of this disturbing event — and finish our wine.

After a while, the rains relented, my friends headed to their Fairport home (where they still had power), and my husband Jack went next door to check on the neighbors, Matt and Kari. Great neighbors that they are, they took the whole thing in stride, and laughed about how snake-bitten they seem to be when it comes to natural disasters and their homes. The tree had managed to punch a small hole in their roof, so Matt had already contacted his insurance agent, already putting things in motion.

Props to RG&E for getting our power back by 1:00 a.m. and for dispatching Birchcrest Tree and Landscape only a half hour after we called to remove a branch from a power line. And a HUGE shout out to J.M. Tree Service, who came out in force early Thursday afternoon to tackle the huge job of removing the huge tree.

And they did that very efficiently. It was a fascinating process watching the J.M. worker-bees sawing and removing huge chunks of tree, being careful not to cause any more damage, and chewing them all up in their shredder. By the end of the afternoon, our landscape looked a lot different, minus a few trees and a big piece of our fence. But the worst of the experience was over. One more adventure in the life of a homeowner.

I hope you and yours fared the storm, and if you did lose any trees, they fell without incident.

Rec Center exhibit commemorates 9/11

This year marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11. In remembrance of that awful day, a very moving exhibit will be visiting the Webster Recreation Center this Friday, Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It’s called “America United: The Days After 9/11.” The traveling exhibit was created around portions of two heat-twisted steel beams from the wreckage of the Twin Towers that traveled from New City to Oak Lawn, IL in 2010. The Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn created the exhibit with help from the Genesis Therapy Center.

Community members are invited to stop by the Recreation Center anytime between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to view the exhibit. There’s no admission charge.

The Webster Recreation Center is located at 1350 Chiyoda Dr., just off of Phillips Rd.

Happy anniversary Village Quilt Shoppe!

I’m embarrassed to say that this occasion almost completely passed me by. But an email I got this morning from The Village Quilt Shoppe reminded me that this cute little shop turns seven years old this week. With all the business comings and goings of late, and all the empty storefronts, I’m happy to see a village business thriving.

That’s especially the case here, because owners Vanetta Parshall and Monique Liberti had a very rocky start. Just three months after they opened their doors in August 2019, a water leak from the apartment above the shop came through the floor and destroyed much of their merchandise. They had to close for almost a month. Then, a year later, COVID struck — and you know how difficult it was for small businesses to navigate that.

But thanks to a solid core of loyal customers, they navigated both of these major obstacles and came back stronger each time. And now this week they’re celebrating seven years in business.

Vanetta and Monique have several special events up their sleeves to celebrate the anniversary, most notably, Birthday Bingo TODAY (Tuesday Sept. 1) at 1 p.m. and Thursday at 11:30 a.m. They’ll be handing out free gifts with every purchase all week, and treats for all. Plus, they’ll have a prize wheel which you can spin for extra discounts.

They promise more fun surprises all week, so make sure to stop by the shop.

The Village Quilt Shoppe is located at 21 E. Main St. in the Village of Webster, at the corner of Lapham Park.
