Congratulations to Joseph Vitello for recently being named Webster Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Business Person of the Year.

Vitello is a Senior Product Advisor for Heartland Payroll Solutions who has been an enthusiastic Chamber member for a number of years and is a familiar face at Chamber breakfasts. He’s been active in our Webster business community and many businesses know him as a leading sales professional in his company.

Vitello was recognized at the Chamber’s most recent Breakfast Before Business meeting, where was presented with a plaque by Barry Howard, President/CEO of the Webster Chamber of Commerce.

Kindergarten Orientation, Registration Set

Parents of incoming kindergarteners in the 2019-20 school year are reminded that the Webster School District’s Parent Orientation and Registration Night is Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at your student’s school. Walk-in registration is available Wednesday through Friday, February 27 to March 1, during the school day, also at your children’s school. Here’s a quick run-down of some of the fun things happening at the Webster Public Library this month:

* Wednesday Night Book Discussion

This month’s book discussion group is reading The Stranger in the Woods, the real-life adventure of Christopher Knight, who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years. The group’s next meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. All are welcome to come and no registration necessary.

Can’t make it this month? Stop by on March 6, when the group will be discussing The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict. You can pick up a copy at the circulation desk.

* The Wonders of Washington State

Lake Quinault, Quinault Rain Forest, Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Vancouver Island, North Cascades National Park, Seattle and San Juan Island … Is it possible to visit all of these breathtaking spots in 2 weeks? Yes, it is! Experience the beauty of Washington State in a travelogue presented Tuesday Feb. 12 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the community room.

* Love Not Loving

Do you hate hearts and flowers? Do you think Cupid is stupid? If you don’t fall for this overrated Hallmark holiday, then you’re in luck! Bring your friends and join us in celebrating Anti-Valentine’s Day with fun activities and tasty treats! Grades 6 to 12 are welcome, and registration is required. Click here for more information.

* February Break activities

Looking ahead to February break, make sure to check the library schedule for all sorts of fun and educational activities for the kids. They can test their engineering skills with the Family Egg Drop Challenge, discover what’s inside a microwave in How it Works, use everyday household items in Building Mini Launchers, learn the beginnings of coding in Offline Coding for Beginners, or build a giant castle on Boxing Day!

The First Baptist Church of Penfield’s next Saturday Flapjack Breakfast is scheduled for February 16 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the church, 1862 Penfield Road.

For just $5 per person, you get all-you-can-eat pancakes, pure maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, and beverages. All are welcome, and the venue is handicapped accessible.

Proceeds this month will benefit the Resolve, an organization dedicated to intervening and preventing domestic and sexual violence against women

Webster Community Mailbag

mailbag iconA couple notes from our schools lead today’s mailbag.

First, a reminder to parents who have children ages birth to 5 years old. You’re asked to help the Webster Central School District plan for future enrollments by completing a short census survey. It’s available on the district website, websterschools.org, and will be open until January 11. If you’d rather fill out a hard-copy form, you can participate by calling WCSD Central Registration at 216-0029.

The third graders at Dewitt Rd. Elementary School recently helped spread the gift of literacy.

After completing an ELA unit on access to books around the world, the students decided they wanted to help their fellow Greater Rochester students get their hands on some great books.

So they worked with their teachers and building administrators to organize, dedicate and donate boxes of books which were no longer being read in school — many of which were from personal classroom libraries from recently retired teachers. The books were delivered on December 21 to the YWCA in downtown Rochester for distribution to the families they serve.

Webster kids doing great things again. You gotta love it.

Here are a few upcoming library programs which might interest you:

Beginner Quilting: This 4-day course (attendees must attend all 4 days) will walk participants through the basics of making a quilt, and at the end each participant will leave with a finished quilt sampler. Fabric will be provided, but please bring your own sewing machine.

The program will be held Saturdays from 10:30 a.mm to 2:30 p.m. on January 19 and  26, and February 2 and 9. Click here to register.

And your kids are not going to want to miss this: the Night at Hogwarts, Saturday January 19 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The night of magical fun will include crafts, activities, music, refreshments, live animals, fortune telling, potions, Quidditch, and more. Tickets are $2 for youth (2-17), $4 for adults. They’re available at the library now.

Webster community mailbag

Here’s a quick note from the Webster Fire Department: When you’re in town this Saturday, Dec. 1 for the White Christmas in the Village celebration, remember to bring a jacknew, unwrapped toy for the JACK Foundation Toy Drive.

All donations can be dropped off at the fire house, 35 South Avenue, and all the toys will be distributed to local charities.

The Webster Lions Club will host their annual FREE Pancake Breakfast with Santa this Sunday, December 2.

Breakfast will be served at Webster East Golf Club, 440 Salt Rd., from 8 a.m. to noon. It includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, English muffins, hot and cold beverages, raffles, prizes, gift certificates and (of course) a visit from Santa.

There’s no charge, but donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit Santa’s Workshop, One Soldier at a Time and other Lions Club charities.

Here’s a nice story from our schools.

Five Webster Thomas High School art students have brightened Rochester General Hospital’s Lipson Cancer Institute by creating landscape murals for the center’s infusion room.

A new Center for Critical Care is being built at Rochester General Hospital and as part of the project, the windows of the infusion room at Lipson have been boarded up — and will be for two to three years — leaving the room devoid of outside light.

The Lipson Cancer Center reached out to Webster Thomas art teacher Todd Stahl inquiring about painting a mural that could cover the windows. Students Quinn Bartusek, Delaney David, Sarah Postigo, Olivia Meynadasy, and Alexandra Steve answered the call. All are members of the school’s art club, who worked throughout last school year to create a five-panel nature themed mural. The finished mural was delivered in October, and on November 21, a few of the artists and their teacher visited the infusion room to see the mural and meet some of the patients.

Finally, since December is just around the corner, here’s a look at some of the programs the Webster Public Library has in store for in next several weeks:

  • LuLaRoe Pop-Up Boutique, Saturday Dec. 8, from noon to 2 p.m. This is a good chance to get a head start on your holiday shopping, and proceeds will benefit the library.
  • Webermusic Interactive Family Concert, Saturday Dec. 15 from 2 to 3 p.m, featuring  husband and wife duo Gerard and Jeanne Weber. The holiday show will includes a mix of holiday (religious and secular) as well as popular tunes from multiple eras. Kids and adults will be invited to play along with shakers and bells.
  • Make Your Own Snow Globes, Wednesday Dec. 16, 3:30 to 5 p.m. A great after-Christmas activity for the whole family. All ages are welcome, and registration is required.
  • And save the date for the library’s Night at Hogwarts, Saturday Jan. 19 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The night of magical fun will include crafts, activities, music, refreshments, live animals, fortune telling, potions, Quidditch, and more! Webster community mailbag

Before I get into a pile of holiday events, here are a few feel-good stories about some great things our kids are doing for the community.

Webster Brownie Troop 60670, a third grade troop based at Plank South Elementary School, went to Wegmans last Wednesday to buy a meal for a Webster family in need of a Thanksgiving meal. For many of the girls, this was their third year doing this. They created a budget, learned about healthy food options and price shopped while in the store.

Jessica Ellsworth, who sent the photo, wrote,

These girls are no strangers to community service. In the past they have gone to Hope House, made toys and collected donations for animals in the shelter, made birthday bags (cake mix, frosting, candles, party hats, etc.) for the food pantry and rang the bell for Salvation Army.

A group of 18 Webster Schroeder students got together recently to provide Thanksgiving meals to 20 families at Mt Hope Family Center (MHFC).

On Monday, several MHFC vehicles arrived at Webster Schroeder’s main office to pick up boxes and bags with all the fixings for 20 Thanksgiving meals that would be provided to at-risk children and families supported by MHFC. The groceries were purchased by Webster Schroeder students who began fundraising for these Thanksgiving meals last month.

This is the seventh year students have partnered with MHFC to raise funds to supply Thanksgiving meals for those served by the organization. They personally reached out to other Webster Schroeder High School clubs, sports teams, organizations, faculty, staff, and Webster businesses to raise more than $2,400 for the Thanksgiving meals. Extra funds raised will provide holiday gifts for children from each of the 20 families that receive a basket.

Holiday special events are beginning to come fast and furious. The ones I’m telling you about today won’t be happening for a week or two, but I wanted to make sure you got them on your calendar.

Country Gardeners of Webster will host their annual sale Saturday December 1.

Presented jointly with the Klemwood Garden Club and the Webster Arboretum Association, the sale will take place at the Webster Parks and Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon.

The sale features a variety of creative wreaths, sleighs, table arrangements, cases and other unique items hand crafted from fresh, seasonal greens. It’s a great opportunity to buy a decorative piece for your home, or perhaps housewarming gift. This sale regularly sells out, so get there early. Admission is free.

The Recreation Center is located at 1350 Chiyoda Drive.

There are three upcoming dates on the Webster Village Band schedule you won’t want to miss.

First, watch for them on a float at Webster’s annual Parade of Lights along Main Street on Saturday Dec. 1. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. at Phillips Rd. and travels west along Main. The band will play Christmas favorites along the parade route.

On Thursday, Dec. 6, the band will perform a concert at Eastview Mall in Victor from 7 to 8 p.m. They’ll be in front f the J.C. Penney Store, playing Christmas favorites and other popular tunes.

Finally, on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. the band will hold their annual Christmas Concert 
at Webster Thomas High School, 800 Five Mile Line Road. It’s always the last and most spectacular concert of the season. You’ll hear plenty of holiday favorites, including a special reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” narrated by Barbara Midura. Light refreshments will follow the concert.

The Pickled Paintbrush, one of the Village of Webster’s newest shops, will hold a Gingerbread House Workshop on Saturday, December 8.

Two classes will be offered, from 3 to 4:30 and 6 to 7:30. Bring the whole family to decorate a gingerbread house complete with all of the candy trimmings. Cost is $35 per family, which includes one gingerbread house. Additional gingerbread people cookies will be available to decorate for $5.

There will even be live holiday music, courtesy my good friends Dave and Patty Wyble.

Since we’re talking about cookies….

The Women’s Club of Webster will hold their 26th Annual Christmas Cookie Sale on Saturday Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon (or sold out) at the Webster Public Library.

Many varieties of homemade holiday cookies will be available. The cost is $9.00 per pound. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the club’s scholarship funds and many other programs in the Webster community.

The Webster Public Library is located in the Webster Plaza at 980 Ridge Rd. Entrance is at the back of the plaza.

So many special events coming up in the next week, especially for veterans and their families.

Free dinner for veterans

Are you a veteran or active duty service member? Do you know one?

veterans dayAll veterans and active duty service members and their families are invited to a free dinner in honor of Veterans Day, on Thursday November 8 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Spry Middle School, 119 South Ave., Webster.

The event is sponsored by the Spry Middle School Student Council, Builders Club, and the Webster-Fairport B.P.O. Elks #2396.

Reservations are appreciated.  Please call Ms. Ritzmann at Spry Middle School at 216-0093.

How about breakfast, veterans? 

The Webster-Fairport Elks Lodge will host a free pancake breakfast for veterans and their families on Sunday Nov. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Veterans will eat for free, and donations are welcome.

Proceeds will benefit the Elks West District Vets Fund. The Webster-Fairport Elks Lodge is located at 1066 Jackson Road.

Learn more about D Day

Also in honor of Veterans Day, the Webster Museum will present a special program on Saturday Nov. 10 called “The Hidden Story of D Day.”

The program will be presented by Kodak retiree and history buff Jack Kowiak, whom some might remember from his presentation last year at the museum about the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. This year Jack will present some interesting facts he’s uncovered about D Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history.

The program will begin at 2 p.m. and be about an hour long. Admission is free, the public is invited, and the museum ladies promise the “best cider and donuts in town.”

The Webster Museum is located at 18 Lapham Park. It’s open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. For more information log onto the museum’s website or visit them on Facebook.

Join the Lions for a super steak dinner

The Webster Lions Club will host its Annual Steak Roast on Saturday Nov. 10 at the Columbus Center, 70 Barrett Drive.

The cash bar will open at 3 p.m., and dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 ($10 for children 5-12) which includes a thick, juicy steak, potato, fresh garden salad, bread and your choice of soda.

All proceeds to go directly to the Willow Domestic Violence Center and to support Webster other Lions Club charities.

Buy a turkey, give a turkey! 

The Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf is looking for your help this year with collecting frozen turkeys for their annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner distributions.

Sizes can range from 8-12 or more pounds. They ask for everyone to deliver their Thanksgiving turkeys to the Dolomite Lodge parking lot (Veterans Memorial Park on Atlantic Ave.) on Sat. Nov. 17 between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. For Christmas, they’ll collect the turkeys on Saturday, Dec. 22, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the same location.

If you would like to donate a frozen turkey, email penfieldfoodshelf@gmail.com to let them know.

Caps for Sale! 

Now here’s a clever little fundraiser, based on a popular children’s book, hosted by the Friends of the Webster Public Library.

IMG_E9392Bartholomew Cubbins had 500 hats, and the Friends will be selling more than 260 hand-crafted hats during their Caps for Sale event later this month.

Just in time for a long, cold winter, you’ll find caps, hats and head-warmers of all sorts, made from felt, crocheted, sewn, and woven, for infants through adults. Adult caps will cost $10, children’s for $5. Buy a hat for a gift, for yourself or to hang on the HOPE House’s mitten and hat tree in the lobby.

The sale is scheduled for Thursday November 15 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday November 17 from noon to 4 p.m. The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road, at the back of the plaza. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Webster Public Library and their programs.

Barre, barre and more barre

ROC & Soul Fitness gives new meaning to the phrase “Barre So Hard” as they gather barre and yoga instructors from other local studios for an epic Barre-A-Thon event on Saturday, November 17.

Barre fitness is a workout that combines the best elements of barre, yoga, Pilates, and functional weight training. Absolutely no choreography, tutus, or leotards can be found in barre class, because barre is NOT a dance class.

roc & soulOwner of ROC & Soul Fitness, Malena Guadagnino and the owner of M/Body, Molly Flaherty, teamed up to create an all morning Barre Class event. They’ve brought together some of the best yoga and barre instructors in the industry, including instructors from: Balance Yoga, Hikyoga, Compass Cycle Studio, M/Body, and ROC & Soul Fitness. Four barre classes will be offered on the hour beginning at 8 a.m. at ROC & Soul Fitness. Participants will have a chance to win prizes from a raffle.

Proceeds from the Barre-A-Thon will benefit GiGi’s Playhouse in Rochester, a learning center that empowers children and young adults with Down syndrome.

Great indoor fun at the library

November is going to be a great month to visit the Webster Public Library.

For starters, the Webster Art Club’s Fall Show is set up all month (Nov. 3-30), so you can stop in anytime during the library’s open hours to see some gorgeous fine art. Things will be set up by Saturday afternoon November 3 at 2:30 p.m.

Wegmans will be on hand next Tuesday November 6 from 3 to 7 p.m. for a flu shot clinic. All right — this is not necessarily fun, but it’s really important to get a shot every year to protect you from — or lessen the severity of — the many strains of the flu that are bopping around this winter. No registration is needed, but remember to bring your insurance card.

And check out these delicious programs the library is cooking up for later in November:

unnamedSushi 101: An instructional program on how to make this tasty Japanese treat. All of the materials will be provided to make a vegetarian California roll, plus a set of wooden chopsticks and a bamboo rolling mat to take home.

Friday, November 23, 2 to 4 p.m., for adults and teens grades 6 and up. Registration is required. Cost is $2 per person, and please bring cash the day of the program.

Holiday Cookie Decorating Class: Students will learn a variety of cookie decorating techniques and use a variety of holiday designs and colors. Friday November 23, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for all ages. (children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.) Registration is required, and please also check out the class supply list.

Gingerbread Cookie Decorating: Teens and tweens are invited to the Teen Lounge after school on Tuesday November 27 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for videos, board games, craft supplies, activities, homework help and snacks. Registration is not required.

Build Your Own Gingerbread House –– Bring the whole family to make a gingerbread house together! Supplies will be provided.

Families must register prior to the program in person at the library. Cost is $3 per family. Register one person per family, but bring as many as you want.

Class times are Saturday, November 24, 10:30 a.m. to noon; Monday, November 26, 6:30 to 8 p.m.; or Tuesday, November 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Registration opens Monday, November 5th.

Another business lost

I learned just a few days ago that Metro Sports Brokers in the Village of Webster is closing.

I don’t know much more about the story, as I haven’t had a chance to talk with owner Tom Spoonhower yet, but on the shop’s Facebook page, he’s using the term “retirement/closing sale” for the deals you can get in the store this week.

I’m sorry to see another long-time business leaving the village, but I wish Tom the best in everything.

News from the Knuckleheads

knucklehead-logoOn a happier note, changes are in the wind for one of my favorite brew stops, Knucklehead Craft Brewing.

Owner Len Dummer sent out a message a little while ago that co-owner George Cline and his family have decided to leave the business.

Len wrote,

We have decided to go in different directions. The Dummer family will be continuing on with Knuckleheads … We thank the Cline family for all of their hard work and dedication to Knucklehead and we wish them the best in their future endeavors.

These last 3 1/2 years have been fun and a learning experience for all of us. We never expected to meet and create such wonderful friendships with our customers.  It is tough for us to look at you as customers…..we see you as friends and fans of Knucklehead!

As Knucklehead approaches its fourth anniversary, the brewery is making plans to be even bigger and better. The Town Zoning Board recently approved their plans for an expansion to the current space. More to come about that.

Webster Fall Fest

The Town of Webster and Webster Parks and Recreation will kick off fall with the annual Webster Fall Festival, on Saturday October 13 from noon to 4 p.m. at Gosnell Big Woods, 680 Vosburg Road.

This is an awesome family-friendly event with donuts, cider, wagon rides, children’s crafts and games, pony rides, food trucks and live entertainment. Admission is free and there’s plenty of parking.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester.

UCC Oktoberfest

After enjoying the Webster Fall Fest, head on over to the United Church of Christ on  Klem Road for their annual Oktoberfest, from 6 to 9 p.m.

This festival is as much history as celebration for the folks at UCC. They said in their press release,

Oktoberfest is a German celebration that takes place when the late summer/early fall crops are harvested, it is also a time to tap barrels of wine and brew that had been sealed the year before. Communities gather to give thanks for blessings received. There is music for singing and dancing, tables are laden with food and drink – and a feeling of “gemutlichkeit” rules the day!

The forbear denominations that merged to create the United Church of Christ were from the German Evangelical and German Reformed traditions. The Oktoberfest will honor those traditions with live music, singing and dancing, and a performance by members of the Rochester Schwaben Verein, a German dance club!

Tickets are $5.00 per person, and German specialties like Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Potato Salad, Bratwurst, and desserts like Apple Strudel and Black Forest Cake will be available for purchase. Tickets are available at the church between services, or you can call the church office at 585-671-3757.

The Oktoberfest is Saturday October 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 570 Klem Road, Webster.

Library book sale — and important news

Let’s start with the important news part.

Next Monday October 8, the Webster Public Library will be CLOSED for staff training. Plus, they’ll be closing early on Halloween, October 31, so make sure you stop in for all your spooky needs before 5 p.m. that day!

Now on to the more fun stuff: The Webster Library Fall Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Webster Public Library, Thursday Oct. 11 through Sat. Oct. 13.

This is a great time to stock your library. Hardcover books are only $1 each, and paperbacks only 50 cents. Credit cards are accepted.

All the books are new to the sale, so don’t think you’ve seen it all before. There will also be DVD’s, Blue Ray, music CD’s and LPs — definitely something for adults, teens and children. including cooking, gardening, hobbies, biographies, religion, history, sports, travel, foreign language, performing arts, humor and more. There will even be a chance to win a book gift basket raffle.

The sale hours are Thursday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Friday and Saturday you can fill a bag for just $4.

The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road, at the back of the plaza.

Town info at your fingertips

IMG_20180917_184850397 (1)Last week, if you’re a Webster resident (or at least live within the 14580 zip code like me), you received the Town Times in the mail. I hope you didn’t just chuck it into the recycling bin, because there’s all sorts of interesting and useful information in there.

The newsletter, which is published three times a year, has regular columns from Supervisor Nesbitt, the police department, the highway department and the like. I kind of skim those. But several of the articles this time around made me pause and think, “Hmmm, I wonder if people know that.”

Here are a few of them:

  •  The Kent Park playground had a new safety surface installed this year. It’s comprised of three cushy layers so kids will fairly bounce off it if they fall. It’s also rated for walkers and wheelchairs. Didn’t know that Kent Park has a playground? This is a good reason to check it out, ’cause it’s a beauty.
  • Some of the older spray animals at the Ridgecrest Spray Park were removed earlier this year and replaced with ground-level water spray features. This great little park is on Ebner Drive, very near the village.
  • Construction of Miracle Field and its amenities is humming along. So far $2.1 million has been raised for the project, and the restroom and  concession pavilion is almost complete. If you haven’t seen this gorgeous accessible playing field yet, stop by; it’s right behind Town Hall in Ridge Park.
  • Did you know that you can receive regular emailed notifications and/or text alerts from the Town about important news items? To sign up, visit the Town of Webster website to register your email and/or phone. You can even choose which departments you’d like to get notifications from.
  • If you don’t like standing in line to pay your taxes, you should check out the new safe drop box located in the front vestibule of Town Hall. You can drop off your form and payment (checks only) in the box, and if it’s received before 4:30 p.m. it will be marked received on that day.
  • Finally — and this is cool — you can borrow an Empire Pass, and several museum passes, from the library! Basically, you check them out just like books, and you can use them at museums and parks for special admission prices.

Webster community mailbag

I’ve got a couple of local events for you, happening on Wednesday, and photo of a surprising new friend at Plank Road North!

Volunteer Fair

This Wednesday, the Webster Public Library will host a Community Volunteer Fair from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Volunteer Fair flier Fall 2018If you’ve ever thought about spending an hour or two a week — or more — using your many skills to help out a worthy organization, this is your chance to find the perfect fit. You’ll be able to connect with almost a dozen local agencies including Challenger Miracle Field, Friends of the Webster Public Library, Friends of Webster Trails, Heritage Christian Services, Maplewood Nursing Home, Never Say Never Foundation, Webster Comfort Care Home, Webster Museum and Historical Society, and the West Webster Fire Department.

No registration is required; you can pop in any time between 3:30 and 6 p.m. The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road, on the back side of the plaza off of Van Ingen Drive.

Free Rabies Clinic

Also on Wednesday Sept. 22, the Town of Webster in conjunction with Monroe County Health Department will offer a Free Rabies Clinic from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Town of Webster Highway Department, 1005 Picture Parkway.

If your dog/cat has had a rabies vaccine in the past, bring the old rabies certificate for your pet to receive a three-year vaccination. Without the certificate the dog/cat will be issued a one-year vaccine certificate.

If you are unable to attend this event, and you’d like to find out about others in our area, visit the Monroe County Health Department online or call (585) 753-5171.

Surprise, Plank North!

Principal Craig Bodensteiner had a happy surprise for staff and students at Plank Road North Elementary School on Friday morning. During the school’s monthly “powwow” pep rally, Bodensteiner introduced a brand new Pioneer mascot, in honor of the school’s 50th anniversary.

Right now, the school’s large new friend has no official name. The students are being given the chance to come up with their own suggestions. So stay tuned!

What I’m working on 

I’ve been in contact recently with representatives from two new Webster businesses, which I’ll be writing more complete blogs about very soon.

The first is THRIVE Studio, a new yoga studio opening soon at 865 Ridge Road, on the upper floor.

My THRIVE contact, Kathy Marchaesi describes the studio as a “non-threatening environment for beginners and experienced yogis as well. The owner, Chelle Walczak-Corsi, will tailor the classes to the participant’s skill level.”

THRIVE will be holding a grand opening on Saturday Sept. 22, including free yoga classes, food, mimosas and socializing. More to come about that.

Also, I chatted the other day with Caleb, the new owner of Savage Chef, which will be hosting its grand opening soon at 5 East Main Street in the village.

Savage Chef is a catering and meal-prep service. But Caleb is also considering putting a few tables into the shop to serve breakfast and smoothies.

Lots more to come about this. I, for one, want to find more about how Caleb originally considered opening a landscaping business, but ended up cooking….

Lots going on at the library

There’s always something going on at the Webster Public Library. Here’s a sampling of programs for children and adults coming up in the next few weeks:

Learn about Ikebana (ee-kay-bah-nah), the Japanese art of flower arrangement, on Thursday Sept. 27 and Friday Sept. 28. During regular library hours, stop into the library’s meeting room for an exhibition of this disciplined art form in which the arrangement is a living thing where nature and humanity are brought together. It’s steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.

What should you do in the fall to ready your garden for spring? Learn about Putting Your Garden to Bed on Thursday Sept. 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. Master gardener Jurij Kushner will teach you what to do in the fall to improve soil quality, and protect perennials, tender plants, trees, and shrubs from winter conditions. The program will also explain how to bring in the house plants, how to winterize tools, and how to prepare water sources for the winter season. Registration is required.

Tired of the same old hair styles? On Monday Sept. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., teens can learn Hair Braiding 101, some fun new braiding techniques to try out on themselves or their friends. The class is designed for teens in grades 6 and up (adults and younger children ages 10 and up welcome if they are accompanying a teen), and registration is required.

Children ages 15 months to 8 years old will explore science, technology, engineering and math with the STEAM Powered Play program on Thursday Sept. 13 from 3 to 4 p.m. or 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Children will learn concepts and practice skills through hands-on exploration and play, such as creative problem solving, critical thinking, self-regulation, pre-math and science, sensory experience, construction and more. We provide experiences with blocks and loose parts, process oriented art, sensory and science, dramatic/pretend play, and language and literacy, and more. Registration required. Children must be accompanied by adults. For more information click here.

Have you always wanted to learn CPR but didn’t know where to go to do it? You can do that at the library, too! NEQALS is offering several classes in Community CPR, First Aid and AED. It is a two-year certification through the American Heart Association. The class is open to everyone in the community from 5 years old and up. Current classes are scheduled for Sept. 29, October 13, November 10 and December 8, all at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Cost is $45 per person.
