3 Apr

Congratulations to Rich Marlin, financial advisor with Edward Jones in Webster, who was recently named Webster Chamber of Commerce 2025 Business Person of the Year.

In addition to his Chamber Committee work with the Program and Membership committees, Rich leads the Chamber’s coordination for the annual United Way Day of Caring. He has sponsored Chamber connecting events such as Connect at Noon and has led past Power Hour presentations.

Rich has contributed financially to many charitable causes including the Webster Community Chest and Comfort Care Home, Hope Ministry, Webster Health & Education Network, Christopher’s Challenge, the Webster Garlic Festival, Wreaths Across America, One Soldier at a Time, the Webster Association of Senior Program Supporters, and the Heritage Christian Stables Day of Caring. AND he was a Boy Scout leader for more than 20 years.

Rich’s efforts with the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is a project especially dear to his heart. Since 2021 he’s served on the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee as a board member and chairperson. The event has raised more than $1,100,000 and Rich personally has raised more than $7000.

We have a plaque for him today that is inscribed with these words: “2025 Business Person of the Year presented by the Webster Chamber of Commerce to Rich Marlin in recognition of your outstanding contributions to the Webster Chamber of Commerce and your commitment to the community”.

In honor of his contributions to our community, Rich was presented with a plaque at the Webster Chamber of Commerce’s February Breakfast Before Business meeting. The Chamber also made a donation to an organization of Rich’s choosing.

The Business Person of the Year is an individual who is recognized as having set a standard of accomplishment in both business and the community. Nominations are from the Chamber’s business members who have made a significant impact on the role of business in the community. The nominee must have been an active member of the Chamber for at least 18 months, someone who is always willing to go above and beyond and be a leader that motivates others. He or she must have a level of community participation by contributing resources in the form of time, talent, or money to our community via projects, clubs, churches, and not-for-profit organizations.

Webster community mailbag

4 Mar

I’ll begin today’s mailbag with a few new tidbits, then add some reminders about events I’ve mentioned earlier.

Library to host Special Needs Parent Resource Fair

The Webster Public Library will host its annual Special Needs Parent Resource Fair on Saturday April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is especially for parents and caregivers who are looking for community resources to support their loved ones who have special needs.

In previous years, almost 60 organizations from all over the Rochester area have participated, and most will likely be returning this year. Click here to see last year’s participant list.

Autism Up will be set up in the Community Room with a sensory space, in case you need a breather and want to learn more about what they have to offer.

Registration is recommended if you’d like a reminder. Caregivers can come any time during the fair, and if you’re unable to attend, information about the attending organizations will be available by request.

The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Rd. at the rear of Webster Plaza.

Great new programs for 55+ at the Webster Recreation Center

Join NASA Ambassador Jim Porter to discover the rich heritage of NASA cosmic exploration and where the latest missions will be taking us into the future.
  • March 25: Maintaining Cognitive Health by psychologist Dr. Arianna Slotnick
An engaging workshop filled with practical and enjoyable strategies to boost cognitive function and maintain brain health throughout your lifespan. You’ll leave with tangible tips and techniques you can implement immediately.

The Talks on Tuesdays are held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The programs are free but registration is required.

And here’s a brand new program at the Rec Center, called TAP TIME, held Fridays from March 21 through April 25 from 11:45 to 12:30 p.m. Whether standing or seated, Tap Time is a safe, fun way to stay active while enjoying upbeat tunes from Broadway and more. New elements made this year’s Pumpkins on Parade even better

27 Oct

Kudos to the Webster Recreation Center for pulling off yet another successful Pumpkins on Parade festival, held Saturday night.

I’ve been attending this event every year since it began in 2020, and it gets better every year. I called it a “festival” above on purpose, because that’s really what it feels like when you emerge from the pumpkin path into the Rec Center’s big sports fields and see thousands of people playing games, enjoying the free snacks, and taking family photos.

What makes this event especially entertaining is how the Rec Center keeps changing it up, adding new elements every year. This year they got particularly creative. Ghostly displays were set up in several areas along the path. A real live witch, complete with a bubbling cauldron, swept back and forth through her witchy lair, cackling and berating anyone who dared to walk by (which was everyone). And the guys from the Parks Dept. came up with a really fun idea: they enclosed the pavilion at First Responders Park and turned it into a not-so-scary haunted house.

After leaving there, paraders followed the pumpkin path into the great fields, where even more fun awaited. There was a hay bale maze for the kids, a bonfire, pumpkin tic-tac-toe, a roller slide for the kids, bowling, family photo areas, and of course free cider, apples and donuts.

Recreation Director Katie Kovar estimated that between the path and displays, there were almost 800 jack-o’-lanterns this year, so thank you to everyone who carved one or more (and to the Rec Center staff members who carved hundreds of their own). The weather was perfect, bringing out thousands of adults and kids to enjoy this family event.

I’m already looking forward to next year to see what the Rec Center will cook up.

The pumpkins are parading again

10 Oct

One of my favorite events of the entire Webster year, Pumpkins on Parade, is returning to the Webster Recreation Center on Saturday Oct. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

This is a super fun and totally free family event where participants stroll along the mile-long Chiyoda Trail behind the Rec Center, which is lined with hundreds of creatively carved, humorous, scary and downright weird jack-o’-lanterns. At the end of the path, there’s free cider and donuts, a bonfire, a family photo area, and for the kids, a hay maze, roller slide and more. And it’s ALL FREE. (Here’s the Facebook event page for more information.) There’s also a shorter path for children and seniors.

The wide variety of designs will blow you away, and the kids will enjoy seeing characters they recognize (I’ve seen Super Mario and Roblox-themed pumpkins, for example). Click here for a photo gallery from last year.

There are some new surprises along the trail this year, too. There are lots of light-up elements, and MAYBE there will be a real witch at the witch’s station handing out candy. The Rec Center will neither confirm nor deny.

Just seeing all the jack-o’-lanterns is fun enough, but the after-hike activities which really make this event a great time for the whole family. There’s so much to do for kids of all ages — which this year included pumpkin tic-tac-toe, pumpkin checkers and pumpkin bowling — and did I mention free cider and donuts???

BUT the success of this event depends on community participation. The Webster Recreation Center needs several hundred carved pumpkins to make the walk amazing. Families, individuals and groups are encouraged to get creative and carve one, two or LOTS more pumpkins. Carved pumpkin drop off is Friday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 26 until 2 p.m.  For each carved pumpkin submitted, you’ll be entered to win a Halloween themed basket courtesy of Diamond Collision.

(And while you’re there, stop by the Webster PTSA Coat and Concert Apparel Drive, happening at the Rec Center on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)

But even if you don’t want to carve a pumpkin, make sure to bring your family out for the event. Pumpkins on Parade takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 26 at the Webster Recreation Center, 1350 Chiyoda Dr. There will be plenty of parking in the Xerox lots across from the Rec Center.

Get out, get hiking, win prizes

25 Sep

The Webster Recreation Center has come up with YET ANOTHER fun challenge to keep us healthy, and this one has the added benefit of spotlighting our town’s beautiful trail system.

They’re calling it their Two-Week Trail Challenge, and it’s based on the brand new Hit the Trail Passport, recently updated in conjunction with the Friends of Webster Trails.

This newly updated passport is a whopping 40 pages long, and includes 32 trails and trail spurs in all, spanning Webster from west to east, measuring more than 36 miles of incredible natural beauty. Each page features a different trail, detailing its individual spurs, their length, difficulty and approximate hiking time.

For the Two-Week Trail Challenge, hikers are encouraged to walk all the trails in the passport between Oct. 5 and Oct. 20. The challenge doesn’t include Webster Park or Bike Trail, but it’s an added bonus if you do them too.  Hikers will record their progress on an online form (emailed to all registrants) and will receive a completion certificate and a keepsake pin as well as social media and website recognition.

Please register for program #301204-A either online or by calling 585-872-7103, option 0. You can pick up one of the new Hit the Trail Passports at Webster Parks and Recreation on Chiyoda Dr., or at Wegmans (Holt Rd. or Eastway) You can also see the passport and download it here.

So much cool stuff happening at the Rec

5 Aug

O boy o boy o boy o boy o boy!

I just got my hands on the Webster Recreation Center’s fall program guide and was instantly reminded about all the neat stuff they schedule for late summer into the winter months.

I’m not just talking about all of the great recreation programs and fitness classes and stuff like that which we all (who are lucky enough to be members) already know about. It’s all the really fun and entertaining community-wide special events that I get excited about.

Like the annual Mud Run, which the program guide tells me is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. This is a really wet, really muddy, incredibly fun family obstacle course run which the Rec Center sets up along the Chiyoda Trail around the back of the building. It’s an easy 1/2-mile long trail, and the whole event is non-competitive and un-timed, so it’s perfect for kids even as young as 5.

Registration is only $5, and sign up is going on now. Register for program #301202 and choose a time slot between 10 a.m. and noon.

* * *

Then there’s the Pumpkins on Parade, which is one of my favorite events of the entire year.

This is a super fun family event where participants stroll along the mile-long Chiyoda Trail, which is lined with hundreds of creatively carved, humorous, scary and downright weird jack-o-lanterns. At the end of the path, there’s free cider and donuts and a bonfire, a family photo area, and for the kids, a hay maze and roller slide. And it’s ALL FREE.

This year’s parade will be on Saturday Oct. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. No registration is necessary for this, so just make sure to put it on your calendar now. Plus, start thinking about how you might want to design your own Jack-o-lanterns for the event, because the Rec Center always needs a LOT of pumpkins!

And here’s something else you want to get on your calendar now: Santa will be visiting the Rec Center on Saturday Dec. 14 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Kids can visit with Santa, have their photo taken with Santa, and enjoy cookies and story time. Kids can also bring their letters to Santa, drop them in his personal mailbox, and can pick up his response on Friday Dec. 20.

The Afternoon with Santa event is free and no registration is required.

Stay tuned for more details about each of these events as they draw nearer.

Get your tickets now for Webster Community Night at the Red Wings

3 Jul

If you haven’t gotten your fill of Rochester Red Wings games this season, here’s a good opportunity to do so, at a great price.

On Friday Aug. 16, the Webster Recreation Center will be partnering with the Red Wings to host a Webster Community Night. The focus will be on our community that evening; Supervisor Tim Flaherty will be throwing out the first pitch, and Webster-based musician Sarah De Vallière is singing the national anthem.

The game starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are only $10; you can use the QR code on the flyer, or click here.

The Wings will be in the middle of a home stand with their cross-state rivals, the Syracuse Mets, and they’re doing really well this year, so this should be an exciting game to watch. And what a great way to spend an evening with the family.

Several businesses and community groups already have signed up as sponsors for the evening, and will have promotional tables set up with giveaways, including Webster Golf Club, Webster Public Library, Wellness 360 Physical Therapy, Kittelberger Florist & Gifts, Diamond Collision and fairlife. If your business is interested in joining them, email Gunnar Hausknecht at ghausknecht@redwingsbaseball.com or call (585) 454-1001 ext. 3024

Speaking of Sarah De Vallière, this very popular local musician will be performing a free concert at the Webster Arboretum on Thursday Aug. 22 as part of the Webster Recreation Center’s Music at the Arb series.

These concerts are held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arboretum’s gazebo, with plenty of room for music lovers to relax in chairs or on blankets, with a cooler at their side filled with drinks and snacks. There’s no charge, and there’s plenty of parking.

BUT BEFORE THAT, the next Music at the Arb concert is scheduled for Thursday July 18, featuring Doctor’s Orders, an acoustic folk and pop duo playing a variety of songs from the Beatles to John Prine, and pretty much everything in between.

Get to know the Webster Chamber of Commerce at upcoming meetings

18 Jun

If you own a business and are not yet a member of the Webster Chamber of Commerce, you’re really missing out on a great way to help your business grow. Two events taking place in the next few weeks are your next opportunities to get to know the Chamber better and find out how the organization can support your business.

The first is the monthly Breakfast Before BUsiness Meeting on June 28 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Webster Golf Club, 440 Salt Rd.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted at the door by Chamber staff and members. Enjoy coffee, tea and juice while you network with dozens of other local business owners. (Anywhere from 70 to 90 companies are represented at these events.) A buffet breakfast will be served at 7:30, and you’ll sit at a table with seven other Chamber members to get to know them and their businesses even better. And there’s always an informative speaker — this month that will be Janine Sanger from the Webster Health and Education Network.

Before the end of breakfast, during pass-the-mic time, everyone attending gets to introduce themselves. Then there are DOOR PRIZES! (Bring a door prize when you come and you’ll get even more recognition at the meeting and on the Chamber website.)

The fee is $19, and reservations are required. Click here to reserve your spot.

The Chamber’s next Eat Drink & Connect event is Tuesday July 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pultneyville Yacht Club, Hamilton St. Extension in Williamson.

Eat Drink & Connect events are opportunities to develop current business connections and start new ones. These are great social opportunities for visitors to get to know the Webster Chamber and its members. Don’t forget to bring your business cards for the raffle, and even donate a raffle prize to earn more visibility for you and your organization.

There’s no cost for this event, but reservations are required.

Webster community mailbag

4 Jun

A couple of fun things coming up this weekend are atop my mailbag.

The first is the Webster Recreation Center’s annual Summer Celebration, this Saturday June 8 from 4 to 10 p.m.

This excellent family-friendly event features a bounce house, food trucks, live music, and fireworks at the end of the night. It’s free and no registration is necessary.

The Rec Center’s Music at the Arboretum series continues on Thursday, June 20 with a performance by Jazz Generation, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This is free (but weather-dependent). Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, plus snacks and drinks if you’d like!

Looking ahead at the Rec Center, mark your calendars now for the Summer Splash party on Saturday July 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the First Responders Spray Park on Chiyoda Dr. Rich the Magic Man will be there with foam bubble fun, and there’ll be free snow cones for all.

Then on Wednesday July 31, come out and see the beautiful new and improved Sandbar Park during Sandbar Splendor from 5 to 7 p.m. There’ll be lawn games, food trucks, raffles and music.

SPEAKING OF THE SPRAY PARKS…

Webster’s two spray parks are now open for the season, at Ridgecrest Park (off of Ebner Drive) and the beautiful, First Responders Spray Park near the Webster Recreation Center on Chiyoda Dr.

The First Responders Park (pictured here) is especially fun for kids and families. It’s a firefighter-themed playground and splash pad, with a nearby pavilion. The splash pad has all sorts of water-fun features including a fire hydrant, a dalmatian fountain and fire truck slide.

Ridgecrest’s spray park is a smaller facility, but is just a short walk from the center of the village. It also boasts an adjacent playground and skate park.

Also coming up this weekend is a program at the Webster Arboretum especially designed for those of you who love peonies.

The Arboretum will present a Program about peonies, the “queen of flowers,” on Sunday June 9 at 6:30 p.m. Arboretum board member George Riehle will give a tour and present the program, focusing on the care and cultivation of peonies and tree peonies. Please register at the Webster Arboretum website.

The Webster Arboretum is located at 1700 Schlegel Rd.

ALSO on Sunday June 9, the Webster Museum will present what has become one of their most popular programs, the Antiques and Collectibles Roadshow.

If you’re curious about the value or origin of an antique you own, bring it to the museum on June 9 at 2 p.m. and the Palma Brothers will use their expertise to provide some insight. There’s no cost, you don’t need to register, and free refreshments will be provided.

The Webster Museum is located at 18 Lapham Park in the Village of Webster.

Finally, this notice which I actually got in my SNAIL MAIL: the Summer Concert Series at Cherry Ridge is back.

The first concert is scheduled for Wednesday June 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., featuring the Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra. Gates open at 5 p.m., and food will be available for purchase beginning at 5:30 p.m. Bring your own lawn chairs, and make sure to pre-register here so you can skip the line. There’s no cost for this community concert.

Looking ahead, on Tuesday Aug. 6, 8 Days a Week takes steps up on the Cherry Ridge stage, so make sure to mark your calendars now.

Cherry Ridge is located at 900 Cherry Ridge Blvd., across from Webster Schroeder High School. Registration is requested. Click here to do so.
