Giving back on this Thanksgiving Day

25 Nov

A reader messaged me the other day, asking where she might find a neighborhood food pantry where her family could make a food donation. It got me thinking that many people out there could benefit from that information, especially at this time of year when we’re feeling so thankful for what we have, and want to help those in our community who are not so fortunate.

HOPE Ministry, housed at Holy Trinity Church, is the largest food pantry currently operating in town. The ministry has an extensive pantry, complete with fresh produce, and is open four days a week for any Webster resident who needs assistance.

Donations of food, hygiene and cleaning products are accepted during their open hours (but please no household donations). Hours are Monday 5 to 7 p.m.; Tuesday 10 a.m. to noon; Wednesday 3 to 5 p.m.; and Thursday 5 to 7 p.m.

Their current wish list includes:

  • chunky soup
  • canned cannellini beans
  • canned mixed vegetables
  • canned pineapple
  • body wash
  • aluminum foil

HOPE Ministry also has two floors of clothing for all ages and in all sizes. They’re always in need of gently used children’s clothing, toddler underwear and socks, and right now would love to get more hats and gloves (especially men’s).

HOPE Ministry is located at Holy Trinity Church, 1460 Ridge Rd., and there’s a cart outside for “contactless” donations.

Webster is also home to four “little free food pantries.” These are small, stand-alone pantries filled with non-perishable food items, where the concept is “take what you need, leave what you can.”

The pantries are hosted by the congregations of four local churches and can be found in the church parking lots. They’re at the Webster Baptist Church on South Ave, Immanuel Lutheran Church on West Main St., the United Church of Christ on Klem Rd., and St. Martin’s Church on Bay Rd.

Donations can be made at any time; just drive up, open the pantry and put in your donations. So maybe next time you head to Wegmans you pick up an extra half dozen cans of veggies, a few boxes of cereal, maybe some extra spaghetti, and swing by one of these pantries on the way home.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends. May your day be filled with family and the blessings that life brings.

Looking for a way to help?

22 Apr

hope

I don’t know about you, but as I try to navigate my aggravation and frustration during this difficult time, I’m finding it helpful to have a purpose — to reach out and help others who might be in a more difficult spot than I am.

Here’s one way you can do the same, while helping our Webster neighbors in a big way: consider making a donation to HOPE Ministry.

HOPE Ministry, located at 1450 Ridge Rd., is a social justice ministry that provides for the special and emergency needs through a food cupboard and clothing closet. During this current challenge, they’re limiting their services to emergency food distribution, and they’re running low on a few things.

Several days ago they posted this list of things they could really use:

Spaghetti sauce
Cooking oil
Dish soap
Crackers
Feminine products
Size 5 Diapers

Next time you’re out doing some shopping, perhaps you could pick up a few extra of these items and drop them off.

For more information, check out HOPE Ministry’s Facebook page or website.

Adopt a family this holiday

7 Nov

hope ministry

HOPE Ministry in Webster, our town’s only food cupboard, is asking our very generous local community to help them out this holiday season by “adopting” a family.

HOPE Ministry provides Christmas every year for more than 100 families in Webster. Through their program, individuals, families, organizations and businesses can adopt a family by providing at least two gifts per child (you will get some suggestions provided by the families) and if possible, also provide food for a Christmas dinner and/or gift cards with which the family can purchase food. The family’s wish list will be sent to you along with other details.

Items are needed by Wednesday, December 12, so if you’re interested in helping out you should contact Hope Ministry ASAP so you have plenty of time to shop and gather the gifts.

For more information or to sign up, contact Chris at shrtstp701@aol.com or call HOPE Ministry at 265-6694.

HOPE Ministry is located at 1450 Ridge Road, Webster. Even if you can’t adopt a family, please consider donating toiletries, diapers in sizes 4-6, laundry and dish detergent, because those items are always needed.

Got school supplies? Don’t need ’em?

10 Aug

Summer 2018

If you’ve got kids (like me) who have long finished high school, but still (like me) have boxes full of new spiral notebooks, packages of lined paper, and unopened packages of pens and pencils tucked away, here’s a great way to clear out the clutter and help local families.

The Webster Public Library is hosting a school supply drive to benefit Hope Ministry, an agency which responds to special or emergency needs of Webster-area residents.

suppliesHope Ministry holds a “Back to School Night” every year to distribute new school supplies to low-income families with children who live in Webster. The collection deadline at the library is August 15.

Check out the list to the left to see what supplies are being requested.

Stop by any time the library is open and drop off your donations in the collection box across from the Check Out Desk.

The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road. Entrance is off of Van Ingen Drive behind the plaza.
