Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union named Chamber Business of the Month

Congratulations to Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union, honored as the July Business of the Month by the Webster Chamber of Commerce.

Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union, located at 815 Ridge Rd. in Webster, is known not only for its financial services, but also for its involvement with education. In 1967, they were known as the Geneva School Employees Credit Union, and were located inside a school building. In 2020, FLFCU merged with Webster Federal Credit Union and enhanced their service capabilities. They now have over 22,000 members, with assets above $215 million.

FLFCU’s Webster Branch is lead by Lynn Dunn. She actively represents the Credit Union throughout the Webster Chamber, currently serving on the Board of Directors and the Program Committee. In May, Lynn also arranged to host the monthly East, Drink & Connect event at the branch.

Upon presenting the award, Chamber CEO and President Barry Howard said, “It is members like FLFCU which add richness to the development of local business and organizational relations, education, and support, as we all navigate this present economy, together. We are very thankful of the support Lynn receives from FLFCU, which allows her to contribute so much to our members.”

Chamberlain Septic & Sewer is Chamber’s Business of the Month

Congratulations to Chamberlain Septic & Sewer, honored as the June Business of the Month by the Webster Chamber of Commerce.

Chamberlain Septic & Sewer, located on Ridge Rd. Jct. east of Basket Rd., had its humble beginnings back in the early 1960s. In 1962, Gordon Beh was a dairy farmer who purchased a backhoe to do some drainage work around his dairy farm. Little did he know that his great work would capture the attention of his neighbors. By 1964, other farmers, friends and builders were asking him to do drainage work, install septic systems and install water services on their properties.

It didn’t take long for it to become clear that Gordon’s true calling was not milk, but mud. In 1966, he decided to leave the dairy business and concentrate exclusively on excavation work. In 1970 he officially incorporated his new business, Gordon Beh Excavating Contractors, Inc.

Gordon’s sons have been part of the business since the 1970s and lead the organization today. They expanded their service offerings with the use of state-of-the-art technology, power snaking equipment, video cameras, and confined space equipment, adding to their truck fleet and heavy machinery.

Get to know the Webster Chamber of Commerce at upcoming meetings

If you own a business and are not yet a member of the Webster Chamber of Commerce, you’re really missing out on a great way to help your business grow. Two events taking place in the next few weeks are your next opportunities to get to know the Chamber better and find out how the organization can support your business.

The first is the monthly Breakfast Before BUsiness Meeting on June 28 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Webster Golf Club, 440 Salt Rd.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted at the door by Chamber staff and members. Enjoy coffee, tea and juice while you network with dozens of other local business owners. (Anywhere from 70 to 90 companies are represented at these events.) A buffet breakfast will be served at 7:30, and you’ll sit at a table with seven other Chamber members to get to know them and their businesses even better. And there’s always an informative speaker — this month that will be Janine Sanger from the Webster Health and Education Network.

Before the end of breakfast, during pass-the-mic time, everyone attending gets to introduce themselves. Then there are DOOR PRIZES! (Bring a door prize when you come and you’ll get even more recognition at the meeting and on the Chamber website.)

The Chamber’s next Eat Drink & Connect event is Tuesday July 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pultneyville Yacht Club, Hamilton St. Extension in Williamson.

Eat Drink & Connect events are opportunities to develop current business connections and start new ones. These are great social opportunities for visitors to get to know the Webster Chamber and its members. Don’t forget to bring your business cards for the raffle, and even donate a raffle prize to earn more visibility for you and your organization.

Webster Comfort Care Home is Chamber’s business of the month

Congratulations to Webster Comfort Care Home (WCCH), honored as the May Business of the Month by the Webster Chamber of Commerce.

Located at the corner of Holt and Klem roads, WCCH has been a sanctuary for terminally ill patients, providing free hospice care, since 2003, The dedicated staff members and volunteers there uphold the dignity and ease the suffering of its residents, while supporting their loved ones in a warm, home-like atmosphere.

Julianne Groff, MSW has been the Executive Director of WCCH since December 2021. She was prepared to assume this role from her professional experiences serving through UR Medicine Hospice. To continue to provide this level of around-the-clock care, Julianne engages the skills and hearts of 14 staff members and more than 56 weekly volunteers. This team includes Board Chair Jackie Carosa, Esq, Primary Nurse Cheryl Hosey, and Volunteer Coordinator Ruth Rappaport-Kristal.

WCCH also provides a safe and supportive learning environment for promising future nurses and physician assistants through collegiate internships.

Beyond one-on-one care, WCCH has hosted weddings, birthdays and pet visits, celebrating life daily. Groff likes to say, “We laugh more than we cry.”

The Comfort Care Home relies in large part on community donations to fulfill its mission. Right now they’re especially looking for wheelchairs and walkers, which can be re-purposed or donated to causes around the world. Click here to find out about other ways to help.

Webster Chamber Names Turner Auto Care April Business of the Month

Congratulations to Turner Auto Care on being named the Webster Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for April 2024. The award was presented at the Chamber’s Breakfast Before Business meeting on March 22.

Turner Auto Care is well known for being one of Webster/Penfield’s finest import specialty repair shops. Located at 1411 Empire Blvd. since 1972, Turner is celebrating its 55th year in business this year.

The Turner business was founded by three Turner brothers. In 2011, Scott Bartlett joined Turner Auto Care, working with Robert Turner, who retired in 2014. Scott’s wife Vicki Bartlett joined the team in 2016, continuing a family-owned business structure.

Upon presenting the award, Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Barry Howard said of Turner, “they believe (that) priorities of education, trust, and exceeding expectations develop customer feelings of being welcomed, safe, and valued.” In addition to being a Chamber member, Turner Auto Care supports several community non-profit agencies including the Webster Girl Scouts, Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets, GirlRock! and Webster Thomas Titan Service Scholars.

Webster community mailbag

There are several new events in today’s mailbag, plus reminders about a few things I’ve mentioned in previous mail bags, so let’s dig in …

WCSD absentee and early voter ballots available

Applications for absentee or early voter ballots for the Webster CSD Annual Budget Vote and School Board Election are now available.

Absentee ballots are for qualified voters of the district who will be unable to attend the polls on the day of the vote, for reasons outlined on the absentee ballot application. Voters must apply for the ballot in advance. Absentee ballot applications are available at the school district website or from District Clerk Heather Murphy, 119 South Avenue, Webster.

Qualified voters of the district who may wish to use an early voter ballot May download one from the school district website or from District Clerk Heather Murphy, 119 South Avenue, Webster.

All absentee and early voter ballot applications must be RECEIVED by the district clerk at least seven business days prior to the vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or the day before the vote if the ballot is to be picked up personally by the voter.

The Webster CSD Annual Budget Vote and Election of Board of Education Candidates takes place Tuesday, May 21, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Webster Schroeder High School gym, 875 Ridge Road, Webster.

Got stuff to shred?

The Webster Chamber of Commerce will be partnering with Kinecta Federal Credit Union on Saturday April 20 for a Drive-up Shred Fest from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Safely dispose of sensitive and unwanted documents for free.

The event will take place at the Kinecta’s Webster Main Branch, 189 West Main St. Limit is 10 boxes per person, and while you can drop them off for free, a $1 donation per box is suggested to benefit Operation Freedom Ride. Click here for more details.


Webster Chamber of Commerce invites you

The Webster Chamber of Commerce would also like to invite any and all business owners to the next Monthly breakfast meeting, Friday April 26.

Network with as many as 90 business and organizational leaders. In addition to networking before and during the breakfast, an informative program is always planned, along with a time to “pass-the-mic” so everyone has an opportunity to be visible. Visitors and members are welcome.

Fashion and fun, courtesy the Women’s Club of Webster

Fabulous food, fashions, fun, friendship, raffles and door prizes are on the menu for the 2024 Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show, Sunday May 19, sponsored by The Women’s Club of Webster.

In addition to the beautiful fashions on display, participants will enjoy a delicious luncheon, with choices of a crisp apple salad with shrimp, cheese, candied nuts, craisins and dressing; or chicken French with lemon sauce, linguine and green beans. Both choices include coffee and dessert.

The donation is $37.00 per person. Please mail your choice of entree, names of people you wish to sit with, and check payable to the Women’s Club of Webster to Laura Fawcett, 28 Wheatstone Circle, Fairport, NY 14450. Reservations are due by May 8. Net proceeds are donated to local charities.

The luncheon and fashion show will be held on Sunday May 19 at the Penfield Country Club, 1784 Jackson Rd., beginning at 11:30 a.m. Fashions will be presented by Chico’s. Questions can be directed to Laura at (585) 329-5317 or Bonnie Travis at (585) 671- 2345.


Also, this news from the Women’s Club of Webster: the ladies will be providing their famous cookies for the cookie table at the Red Cross blood drive, Saturday April 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Martin Lutheran Church, 813 Bay Rd.

Appointments for the blood drive are not required. Donors should feel free to just drop in. For more information about the blood drive, please contact Katie Houtat 585-353-9964.


It’s all about the bees

The Webster Arboretum will present a fascinating program on Tuesday April 23 when longtime Webster beekeeper Mike Kopeki will answer the question, “The Queen Must Die and Drones Too …WHY? ”  

Mike will be joined by Kevin Gorman, who raises queen honeybees, and Amy Stringer, beekeeper and owner of the North Bee honey shop in the Village of Webster. The three presenters will discuss a variety of topics all about bees and beekeeping.  

No registration or fee is required. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Meet at the Curry Building at the Webster Arboretum, 1700 Schlegel Road.


WHEN will host spring Drug Take-Back event

Webster Health and Education Network, together with the Town of Webster and the Webster Police Department will host a DEA National Drug Take Back event on Saturday April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Webster Town Court, 1002 Ridge Rd. (behind Town Hall; look for the blue roof). Clear out your medicine cabinet to help to keep Webster safe. This will be a drive-through event so you don’t even have to get out of your car! 

This is your chance to safely dispose of unused, expired or unwanted medications.

Registration is not required, but if you register you’ll get a reminder via email about the event. Learn more at Whendfcc.org


Special Needs Parent Resource Fair

The library will host a Special Needs Parent Resource Fair on Saturday April 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. This is especially designed for parents, guardians or caregivers looking for more information about resources and opportunities in our community for children and adults with special needs. More than 50 agencies from all around Rochester are already signed up. Click here to see the list of participants. Books, books books (and all really cheap!)

The Friends of the Webster Public Library‘s spring book sale is happening April 24 to 27, with all books priced 50 cents (paperbacks) or $1 (hardcovers).

The Friends Members Night will be April 24 from 4 to 7 p.m., with the general public sale from Thursday through Saturday. Bring your own bag on Friday or Saturday and fill it for just $5,

All proceeds will benefit the Webster Public Library.  


Chicken BBQ for dinner

St. Martin Lutheran Church will hold a Drive Thru Chicken BBQ on Saturday, May 4 at the church, 813 Bay Road, Webster. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and will continue until all dinners are sold out.

Dinners will include a half chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw, roll, butter and cookie, and will cost $15.

The event will be drive-through only and there will be no advance sales; first-come, first-served. Cars should enter the parking lot, follow the signs, and purchase dinners using exact payment of either cash or
check. Cars will then pick up boxed dinners.

Proceeds from the BBQ will support both St. Martin’s Little Free Pantry and Christmas Stocking Project, which reaches more than 500 local youth in Monroe and Wayne counties.

Thomas Landscape named Webster Chamber Business of the Month

Congratulations to Thomas Landscape and Design on being named the Webster Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for March 2024.

Thomas Landscape and Design, at 775 Ridge Rd. Webster, has served the greater Webster community for 46 years with full-service landscape, lawn, tree and shrub selection; design, planting and maintenance; and garden center and nursery services. Led by owner Richard Thomas, the business employs 46 full- and part-time employees, with 18 trucks.

Upon presenting the award, Chamber President & CEO Barry Howard stated,

Second-generation businesses send a strong message. Some characteristics of this business stand out to me as success factors: Richard’s vision of this service starting as a high school student, outdoor passion, strong work ethic, customization, visual attraction, steady business building over time, including bricks and mortar, and a commitment to the community. They are a solid example of success for our community.

In addition to their landscape work for community members and businesses, the talented Thomas Landscape staff members have for more than 35 years maintained the WEBSTER bushes that greet visitors on Rt. 104 east of the Bay Bridge, and are working hard to bring them back to their full beauty following the vandalism many years ago. Owner Richard Thomas and his wife Pam have started the transition toward retirement, and Richard’s daughter Heather and her fiancé Tony will be stepping into leadership roles. But you’ll still see Richard and his wife at work. Their retirement will progress in stages to ensure a smooth transfer of responsibilities, while maintaining and building upon their 46 years of success.

Who takes care of those WEBSTER bushes?

We drive by them all the time, those bushes along Rt. 104 just east of the Bay Bridge that spell out WEBSTER, welcoming residents and visitors alike to our fair town. But did you ever wonder about their history, who originally planted them and who takes care of them now?

According to Webster Chamber of Commerce president Barry Howard, the WEBSTER bushes installation was a project spearheaded by the Chamber in 1986 as a beautification project. The Chamber commissioned the design in February of that year, got all the required permits by September, then arranged to have the bushes and stone scape installed. The sailboat motif in colored stone mosaic was added in 1993.

The landscaping company who originally planted the bushes went out of business, and Thomas Landscape took over their maintenance just a year or two later. The company has been taking care of them every year since, for more than 35 years, at the Chamber’s expense.

Many will remember that back in 2010, vandals destroyed the bushes, cutting every single one of the plants to the ground. At the time, the Chamber asked people if something like a welcome sign should be put in instead. But the community stood behind their much-loved WEBSTER shrubs, and overwhelmingly voted to replace them. With help from a radio-thon fundraiser hosted by WARM 101.3, 75 new bushes were purchased and planted.

It’s been more than 10 years, and the new bushes are doing pretty well, but it’s going to take them a while to get back to their former glory.

“They’re coming around,” said Thomas Landscape owner Rick Thomas. “Last year we started doing an organic-based fertilizer on the plants and it’s definitely helping.”

“It’s an extremely hard area to grow plants because of the steep slope,” he added. “You don’t realize how steep it is until you’re standing on it. Water and nutrients just roll down it. It’s a tough area to grow anything.”

Between the Chamber of Commerce and Thomas Landscape, the WEBSTER shrubbery continues to get regular TLC. The stone scape was repainted a few years ago, and Thomas staff members head up there three times a year for general maintenance. They’re even giving some thought to perhaps changing out the stone design in front “to keep things fresh.”

“I think it’s still viable,” Rick said. “People like to look at it. It’s fun; we’ll be up there trimming and weeding and cleaning up and people drive by, waving and cheering.”

I’ll be one of those people waving and cheering next time I see you up there, as a thank you for keeping our favorite town landmark looking great.

Webster community mailbag

Strap in, folks, ’cause this is a long one.

Good food for a good cause

Boy Scout Troop 262 will be hosting their “Famous Spaghetti Dinner” on Saturday March 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Webster Firemen’s Exempt Bldg. on Sanford St.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 10. You can eat in or take out. And bring extra cash for the bake sale!

News from the Friends of Webster Trails

The Friends of Webster Trails, working with the Village of Webster, are proud to introduce the newly updated informational kiosk where the Hojack Trail meets 250 (North Ave.).

The kiosk was built by Eagle Scout Alex Groff in 2018, and for some years it held temporary postings. But recently, the Village gave the kiosk a professional makeover and it looks great. On one side is an aerial photo of the area from years ago, provided by the Webster Museum, which shows some prominent industries. QR codes are provided if you want to find out even more. On the other side is a map from about the same time, and more photos. It all illustrates the reason for the Hojack railroad and its importance to the area.

New swag at the Museum

If you love the Webster Museum, you’re going to love the new promotional items they’ve just introduced. There’s a nice selection of new mugs and caps, which join an already impressive variety of fun, museum-themed merchandise including stickers, t-shirts, water bottles, aprons, bags and more. (I know you want a WLiWL sticker.)

Click here to see the whole collection. You can’t buy this new merchandise online, so stop by and visit the museum at 18 Lapham Park in the Village of Webster. They’re open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Carlsen named CWZ Elementary PE Teacher of the Year

Webster CSD is proud to announce that Danielle Carlsen has been selected as the 2024 Central Western Zone Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year

The State Road Elementary School PE teacher was recommended for the award by one of her colleagues who felt that Carlsen exemplifies a true professional in the field of physical education at the elementary school level. 

Petitions available for BOE candidates

The Webster CSD Budget Vote and Election of Candidates is Tuesday, May 21 at Webster Schroeder High School. Anyone wishing to run for the board of education (BOE) may pick up a nominating packet from the district clerk’s office, 119 South Avenue, Webster, any weekday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Petitions must be returned to the district clerk’s office no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, April 22. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will each serve three-year terms beginning July 1.

Questions about candidacy or eligibility may be referred to District Clerk Heather Murphy at (585) 216 0001 or heather_murphy@webstercsd.org.

Here are some important dates to remember:

  • April 16: BOE adopts budget to be put before voters, 6 p.m.
  • May 7: Public hearing on proposed 2024-25 budget, 6 p.m.
  • May 21: WCSD Budget Vote and Election of Candidates; polls open 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Webster Schroeder High School gym, 875 Ridge Road.

Webster Chamber of Commerce invites you

The Webster Chamber of Commerce has two events coming up this month, and business owners are all welcome, whether you’re a member of the Chamber or not.

On Wednesday March 6, the next Webster Chamber Eat Drink & Connect will be hosted by Chamber member Monroe Piping & Sheet Metal.

Network with Chamber members and visitors while enjoying refreshments and door prizes. A brief introduction to the business world of Monroe Piping & Sheet Metal will also be provided by the owner and Chamber board director Dan Dunn.

Then, coming up on Friday March 22 is the next Monthly Breakfast Program meeting. Network with an many as 90 business and organizational leaders during the monthly Webster Chamber breakfasts. In addition to networking before and during the breakfast, an informative program is always planned, along with a time to “pass-the-mic” so everyone has an opportunity to be visible. Visitors and members are welcome.

A few reminders

Here are some reminders about events I’ve already mentioned in a previous mailbag, but want to make sure you remember them.

  • The Thomas vs. Schroeder Charity Basketball Game will be this Wednesday night March 6 at Webster Thomas High School, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The family-friendly event will pit Thomas/OWL staff and faculty against Schroeder/GOAL staff and faculty in a friendly winner-take-all-bragging-rights game. Concessions will be available. Admission is only $5 (suggested donation), and all proceeds will benefit Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester.  Additional donations would be greatly appreciated as well.
  • The next general meeting and luncheon for the Women’s Club of Webster will be held on Thursday March 21 at the Penfield Country Club, 1784 Jackson Rd. Janine Sanger, Executive Director of WHEN:DFCC, Webster Health and Education Network will be this month’s speaker. The event begins with a social mix-and-mingle at 11:15 a.m., followed by a brief meeting at noon and lunch at 12:30 p.m., and the presentation. The cost is $24. Send your check made out to WCW by March 14 to Carolyn Rittenhouse, 405 County Line Road, Ontario, NY 14519. Questions? Phone Carolyn at 585-265-1303.
  • The Friends of the Webster Public Library will hold its third annual Vintage and Collectible Book Sale on Thursday March 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The books are priced between $8 and $200. (Prices are firm.) A variety of books on Rochester, World War II, poetry, sports, movies, religion, classics, biographies, juvenile and adult fiction will be available. Many of the books are rare, unusual and in good to better condition. All proceeds from the event will benefit programs of the Webster Public Library.

Elena Bernardi named Webster Chamber Business Person of the Year

Congratulations to Elena Bernardi, owner of Bernardi & Company CPAs, who was recently named Webster Chamber of Commerce 2024 Business Person of the Year.

Elena is a wife, mother, business owner, and volunteer. Over 20 years ago she made the decision to move her business to Webster. Since that time, Elena has been very active within our community. In addition to her Chamber membership, Elena is an Advisory Board Member at Canandaigua National Bank. She also serves as the Webster Economic Development Alliance Treasurer and is currently President of the Webster Village Business Improvement District (BID).

At the BID, Elena leads volunteers in a quest to make the Village of Webster businesses visible, impacting business owners and residents. Her planning and leadership have brought to Webster the recent shredding event at Village Hall, the Beer Garden, Family Game Nights, Winter Wonderland, Easter Egg Hunt, movies and concerts in the park, Jazz Festival, Trick or Treat Trail and Health and Wellness Fair.

Candidates for Business Person of the Year are nominated by Chamber of Commerce members, the winner chosen based on length of Chamber membership, business accomplishments and community service.

The next Webster Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Before Business meeting is scheduled for  Friday Feb. 23 beginning at 7 a.m. at the Webster Recreation Center. Business owners are encouraged to attend for an opportunity to network with as many as 90 business and organizational leaders. There’s always an informative program followed by “pass-the-mic” time when everyone has an opportunity to be visible. Visitors and members are welcome.
