Village Beer Walk just got better

Of all the special events that take place every summer in the Village of Webster, the Beer Walk is one of my favorites. It’s always a great opportunity to get together with my closest friends, wander through the village, sample some great brews, and laugh A. LOT.

This year, the walk is better than ever. It’s scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6, and not only will we be able to sample beer, cider and food from local businesses, but the Webster Business Improvement District (BID) — which hosts the walk — has organized a car show the same day, on West Main St. A variety of cars will be on display, from classic cars to hot rods. Both events take place from 4 to 7 p.m.

BUT THERE’S MORE! Also that day, Sept. 6 from noon to 5 p.m., the Red Hot and Blue Band will host their annual St. Jude’s Benefit Concert. This year they’ll be joined by Sarah De Vallière and The Tug Hill Band.

The BID is calling the whole day their “Fall Kickoff Event,” a whole afternoon and evening of entertainment and fun in the village.

The car show is free, and the concert is free (but donations will be accepted). Tickets are not yet available for the Beer Walk, but when they are, they’ll be available here.

Lots of other events coming up in the next many weeks, including:

– On Sunday, Aug. 17, Kittelberger Florist will host a Summer Roots Family Event from noon to 4 p.m. at the store on Orchard St. The whole street will be closed off, because this is going to be a huge event. There’ll be live music by Yacht Club, food trucks, face painting, a petting zoo, a balloon artist, a family activity from the Webster Public Library, and giant yard games.

– The next Friday Night concert in Gazebo Park is August 22, featuring Eight Days a Week, Webster’s favorite Beatles band. It begins at 7 p.m., and you’ll want to get there early for this one. There’s no charge. Sips & Scoops ice cream truck should be there that night as well.

– The Webster Jazz Festival returns with Jazz in the Pubs on Friday Aug. 15 and Jazz on the Street on Saturday Aug. 16. Check my earlier blog for details.

– M/Body is still offering complimentary Community Yoga & Pilates classes at Gazebo Park on North Ave., every Saturday through Sept. 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. The classes are free, but participants need to register in advance here. Bring your own mat and water. In the case of inclement weather, this class will be canceled. However, participants are welcomed to sign up for M/Body’s in-studio yoga class that runs at the same time.

Coming up this fall in the village:

  • Saturday, October 25: Trick-or-Treat Trail  
  • Saturday, November 22: Bourbon Bash 
  • Saturday, December 6: Winter Wonderland in the Village

Jazz Festival details: who’s playing and when

Get ready to dance in the streets in a few weeks, when the Webster Jazz Festival returns.

The event will stretch over two days Friday and Saturday Aug. 15 and 16, kicking off with “Jazz in the Pubs” Friday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Six different bands are scheduled to perform at six different village pubs and restaurants, with staggered start times, so you can visit visit several (or all) of the venues for a drink and a bite to eat, and enjoy as many bands as you like. The musicians represent some of the best from the Rochester music scene, including some returning favorites and some new faces.

Also that night, the Jazz Festival Street Fair returns with vendors set up up and down West Main.

The music continues Saturday night when jazz takes to the street.

Beginning at 4 p.m., an outstanding lineup of musical entertainment will perform from the big West Main Street stage, featuring musicians from around Rochester and Upstate. There will be some tables and chairs set up, but they go pretty fast, so plan to bring your own, set them up in the middle of the street and enjoy music all evening long. Food and drinks will be available from village merchants.

Friday, August 15, 2025 — Jazz in the Pubs

  • 5:30 p.m.: Marvin Dolly & Mel Henderson at JoJo Bistro, 42 East Main St.
  • 6:00 p.m.: Tim Forester Trio at Cobblestone on Main, 109 West Main St.
  • 6:30 p.m.: Andy Calabrese & Peter Chwazik at Annette’s Restaurant, 27 West Main St.
  • 6:30 p.m.: Sarah DeValliere and Emily Champion at Mary Wee Pub, 2 West Main St.
  • 7:30 p.m.: Paradigm Shift at Ploty’s Hometown Tavern, 27 West Main St.

The Webster Jazz Festival is an outstanding event that really brings out the best the Village of Webster has to offer. The streets are packed with people, the hanging baskets and planters are in full bloom, and after dark the street is lined with twinkly lights. There’s dancing and drinking and eating, and so much fun for friends and family. Plus there’s no admission.

Photos from the 2024 Webster Jazz Festival

I don’t know what it was about this year’s Webster Jazz Festival, but on Saturday night there was a LOT more dancing in the street than I remember from any years past.

Perhaps it was the gorgeous weather, and it certainly had a lot to do with the great music coming from the stage. But I also think that the Jazz Festival has really found its groove (pun intended) and has become known as one of our village’s best family events of the summer.

Once again this year the event drew huge crowds, which seemed to grow bigger every minute as the evening progressed, this despite the Heroes and Hidden Heroes music festival taking place just down Main Street at Fireman’s Field. And those who did stay until after dark to watch Prime Time Funk close the show were treated to a charming display of twinkly lights strung along and across Main Street and through the trees.

Congratulations to the Webster BID for putting on another great event (and especially to Tom Spoonhower), to all the restaurants who set up shop to provide dinner, and to all of the performers for putting on an outstanding show.

Friday night’s Jazz in the Pubs was well attended, too, by the way. Even though the threatening forecast earlier in the day caused the street festival to be canceled, the pubs were packed as people hopscotched around the village to sample five different bands.

Another reminder about the Jazz Festival

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last month, you already know about the Webster Jazz Festival coming up this Friday and Saturday.

The fun begins Friday night at 6:30 p.m. with “Jazz in the Pubs,” featuring five different bands playing in five different pubs, at staggered times so music lovers can travel from one to another to enjoy a wide variety of fine jazz. (Keep reading for the schedule.) And P.S. the Jazz in the Pubs street event has been cancelled due to the rain.

Then, Saturday night is the big-time party beginning at 4 p.m. with an outstanding lineup of musical entertainers performing on the West Main Street stage. Bring your folding chairs and coolers, and just set up camp for the evening along with thousands of your friends and neighbors.

Here are the schedules:

Friday Aug. 9

  • 6:30 p.m.: Andy Calabrese and Peter Chwazik at Cobblestone on Main, 109 W. Main St. Calabrese is a pianist, educator and music producer and Rochester-based Chwazik is a bassist and guitarist.
  • 6:45 p.m.: Sarah De Vallière at JoJo’s Webster, 42 E. Main St.An award-winning composer, classically-trained pianist and outstanding singer-songwriter, performing “cinematic folk rock with nuances of jazz and pop.”
  • 7:00 p.m.: Marvin Dolly & Mel Henderson at ROC Style, 5 W. Main St., performing “organic, funky grooves with street-level ambiance.”
  • 7:15 p.m. Joe Chiappone & Vince Ercolamento at Ploty’s Tavern, 27 West Main St., jazz guitar and saxophone.
  • 8:15 p.m.: Bill Tiberio Band at the Coach Sports Bar, 19 W. Main St., original contemporary jazz in a multitude of styles.

Saturday Aug. 10

  • 4:00 p.m.: CMD, re-imagining old rock and pop hits on piano, bass and drums
  • 5:15 p.m.: Sofrito, Latin jazz quintet
  • 6:45 p.m.: Smooth jazz sounds from Judah Sealy, a graduate of School of the Arts and Roberts Wesleyan College
  • 8:30 p.m.: Prime Time Funk, 10-piece powerhouse of passionate musicians who write, arrange, and perform a world-class combination of funk, jazz and R&B 

By the way, there’s no admission charge for any of this.

Photos from the Jazz Festival

Another excellent Webster Jazz Festival is in the books.

The weather could not have cooperated any better Saturday night when thousands of jazz lovers filled West Main Street to enjoy an afternoon and evening of great music, presented by some very talented musicians. The food and beverage vendors lining the street were kept busy all night, and the pubs and restaurants that stayed open during the festivities definitely saw increased traffic. And I have to say, the village never looks more beautiful than on Jazz Festival night, with the white lights twinkling in the trees and stretched across West Main.

It was especially nice to see so many children in the audience, dancing to the music along with their parents and grandparents, clearly having the time of their lives.

A lot of effort goes into this annual festival, and we have Tom Spoonhower and the Webster Business Improvement District to thank for that. They do a great job every year showing the entire Rochester area how vibrant — and charming — the Village of Webster is.

Webster community mailbag

Summer is quickly winding down, but the number of special events happening in these last weeks of the season have not slowed one bit.

Of course, one of the biggest events of the Webster year takes place this weekend, Friday and Saturday Aug. 18 and 19. It’s the Webster Jazz Festival, which for the last 17 years has brought some amazing jazz musicians to entertain us in the pubs and on West Main St.

The event kicks off with Music in the Pubs on Friday evening when six different bands are scheduled to perform at six different village pubs and restaurants, with staggered start times, so you can visit visit several (or all) of the venues for a drink and a bite to eat, and enjoy as many bands as you like.

The music continues Saturday night when jazz takes to the street. Beginning at 4 p.m., an outstanding lineup of entertainers will take to the big West Main Street stage, featuring musicians from around Rochester and Upstate. Bring some folding chairs and enjoy music all evening long. It looks like the weather will be perfect.

The Webster Marching Band Boosters’ next Food Truck Rodeo is scheduled for Friday August 25 from 4 to 8 p.m at Webster Fireman’s Field.

The Marching Band Boosters sponsor various fundraising events throughout the year to help pay for the Webster Marching Band’s equipment, show productions, and competition-related trip expenses.

More than a dozen food trucks will be on hand, including The Meatball Truck, Roc City Sammich, Rob’s Kabobs, Kona Ice, Eat Greek, Chefs, ROCDilla, The Beer Wagon, Al Dente, Bay Vista Taqueria, Bruster’s, Mr. Squeeze and the Melt Truck.

There will also be face painting for the kids. (Clip the coupon from the poster.) Admittance to the rodeo is FREE, and all proceeds from the food trucks will benefit the Marching Band Boosters and Webster Marching Band members.

Webster NY Hope, in partnership with the Webster Public Library, is hosting a school-supply drive to help our local students have what they need to start the school year off strong.

Supplies are being collected at the Webster Public Library, 980 Ridge Rd., and will be distributed at Webster Hope’s Back-to-School Night on Tuesday Aug. 29.

Also happening soon at Webster Hope: their annual garage sale, scheduled for Sept. 13 to 16 at 1450 Ridge Rd. This is always a huge sale, so make sure to put it on your calendar.

Speaking of garage sales, here’s a final reminder to drop off your donations for the upcoming Webster Museum Barn Sale, scheduled for Sept. 14 to 16 at 394 Phillips Rd.

The barn doors are open, and community members are invited to stop by anytime to drop off donations. Just head down the driveway to the barns, and donations can be left inside. Donation receipts are on the table. Although you can donate any day, museum volunteers are on site Monday mornings if you would like assistance unloading your donations.

Donations will only be accepted through Monday Sept. 4 (Labor Day) so museum volunteers will have plenty of time to get everything ready for the 14th.

Acceptable items include antiques, collections and collectibles, kitchen and household items, décor, small appliances, toys, tools, and small furniture. What CANNOT be accepted include books or magazines, computers, clothing, linens, baby cribs or car seats, large furniture, snow skis or water skis, large exercise equipment, audio or video tapes (VHS tapes, music cassettes, etc), or entertainment electronics, (TVs, stereos, DVD players, etc).  

I’ll be highlighting the barn sale again as it draws closer. But in the meantime, get those donations … un … donated!

Looking forward to September, the annual Webster Rocks ALS music festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9 at Firemen’s Field.

The festival is held to raise awareness for ALS in memory of Kacie Jones, a longtime employee of the Coach/Rubino’s, who passed away from ALS at 31 years old, less than two years after he was diagnosed. Proceeds will benefit organizations that fight to change the standard of case and empower people with ALS. (Visit www.healingals.org or www.teamgleason.org for more information.)

The festival will be held on Saturday Sept. 9 at the Webster Firemen’s Field on Ridge Rd. There’ll be food trucks and plenty of liquid refreshment. Doors open at 2 p.m. and an incredible music line-up starts at 3 p.m., featuring Anthony Blood, State Line, Brass Taxi, Dial Up and M80s. (Check the Facebook event page for more details about the schedule.)

Tickets are $20 in advance (available from the Coach Sports Bar, 19 W. Main in Webster) and at Eventbrite (but they charge fees, so stop by the Coach to save money). Cost is $25 the day of the festival. Admission is free for ages 12 and under.

If you can’t get enough music, here’s another FREE concert taking place that same day, Saturday Sept. 9 at Gazebo Park on North Ave.

It’s the second annual RHB St. Jude Benefit Concert, which this year features not just your hosts, the Red Hot and Blue Band, but also Sarah De Vallière, The M-T-V Jam Band (Moore Tyrrel and Vaughan) and The Tug Hill Band. Pub 235, Guida’s Pizza and Terry’s Tips And Beef will also be there with some great food.

This concert is becoming an annual event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in honor of September being Child Cancer Awareness Month. The bands start performing at 1 p.m., and admission is free, but donations in any amount will be gratefully accepted throughout the show.

Those special events are just the tip of the September-entertainment iceberg. Here’s a quick look at several other events you’ll want to get on your calendar. I’ll provide more details in future blogs, so stay tuned.

More music and family fun in the village

There’s so much summer fun happening in the village these days, I’m having a hard time keeping on top of it all. So here’s a quick reminder about a few things coming up. (P.S. more information about these events can be found on the Webster BID website.)

This Friday Aug. 4, the Friday Night concert series at the gazebo continues with a performance by singer/songwriter Sarah De Vallière. She describes her music as “Randy Newman meets Joni Mtchell in a bar.” Not sure what that means, but I have seen Sarah play and she is very talented and very entertaining.

The concert will be at Village Memorial Gazebo park on North Ave., and begin at 7 p.m. There’s no cost, and you’re welcome to bring your chairs, blankets and a cooler with food and refreshments.

Next Friday, grab the family and come back to Gazebo Park for the next Family Games Night.

From 6 to 9 p.m. you’ll enjoy giant Jenga, giant Connect Four, corn hole, sidewalk chalking, beer and wine from The Coach and takeout from West Main Street restaurants.

Looking ahead, you definitely don’t want to forget about the Webster Jazz Festival, which is returning Friday and Saturday Aug. 18 and 19.

On Friday, enjoy Jazz in the Pubs at six local pubs and restaurants, then on Saturday the jazz takes to the street when four outstanding jazz bands perform beginning at 4 p.m. on the big West Main Street stage. Click here to see details about who’s playing and when.

ALSO… don’t forget to register for the Village Bed Race on Saturday Sept. 16.

This is going to be tons of fun, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of creative contraptions the bed race competitors will come up with. Teams will be separated into two age groups, 14 to 19 and 20 and up. The course will include one challenge stop, there’ll be two heats and one final elimination race.

Complete rules, bed design specifications and registration links can be found on the Webster BID website, but here are a few highlights:

  • Wheels must be NO larger than 8 inches
  • There are five participants for each bed, four pushers and one sleeper
  • Sleeper must wear some type of sleepwear during the race

First-ever Jazz Fest Street Fair a success

West Main Street was hopping last night during the first annual (I hope) Webster Jazz Festival Street Fair.

There were perhaps a dozen or so vendors and street artistans set up, most of them enjoying brisk business from the hundreds of adults and children in attendance. Especialy fun was the photo booth sponsored by LaLa and Whimsies, and the Dancing With Denise table, where Denise was handing out tiaras, fairy wands and sparkly bows.

I know for a fact that the Webster Business Improvement District (BID) — and especially chairperson Elena Bernardi — organized the event on less than a month’s notice, to coincide with the first night of the Webster Jazz Festival. I’m sure Elena would’ve liked more vendors and artisans to participate, but it turned out to be a really nice event for its first year. I hope the BID considers doing it again next year. With more planning time, it should be even better.

Webster Jazz Festival returns this weekend

Get ready to dance in the streets this weekend, when the Webster Jazz Festival returns after a one-year break thanks to Covid.

The event will stretch over two days this Friday and Saturday, kicking off with “Jazz in the Pubs” Friday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. Five different bands are scheduled to perform at five different village pubs and restaurants, with staggered start times, so you can visit visit several (or all) of the venues for a drink and a bite to eat, and enjoy as many bands as you like.

Here’s the schedule (click on the name to get more information about each band):

West Main Street will also be hopping that evening with the second Family Game Night and Beer Garden.

The first Family Games Night on July 30 was very well received, so this second one will feature all the same fun. From 6 to 9 p.m., West Main will be closed and filled with with activities including Dancing with Denise for the kids, sidewalk chalk, Giant Jenga, Giant Connect Four, Corn Hole, cookie decorating, food and drinks. So basically, you can pop into the pubs for some music, then out onto the street for some games. It should be a great evening for the whole family.

The music continues Saturday night when jazz takes to the street.

Beginning at 4 p.m., an outstanding lineup of musical entertainment will perform from the big West Main Street stage, featuring musicians from around Rochester and Upstate. There will be some tables and chairs set up, but they go pretty fast, so plan to bring your own, set them up in the middle of the street and enjoy music all evening long.
