The latest missive from Supervisor Nesbitt was packed with so much useful information, it warranted a blog all its own.

For starters, the town has updated its website, adding a brand new section called “Living Here.” You’ll find it nestled under the “About Us” tab on the top of the site. Supervisor Nesbitt describes it as “a one-stop spot for all aspects of living in Webster.” Its sub-links include “Retirement Living,” “Addiction and Recovery Support Resources,” “Organizations and Clubs” and “Community Support Groups.”

It’s a good start, and there’s a ways to go to fully represent all that our town has to offer. But, as Nesbitt writes, it’s “an ongoing community outreach effort, and these new sections will be continually updated for residents.”

Leaf Pick-Up Begins

We knew summer couldn’t last forever, so the announcement of the autumn leaf pick-up schedule should come as no surprise.

The Town of Webster Highway Department will start the annual Leaf Pick-Up on Monday October 23, weather permitting. Every effort will be made to pick up leaves on a weekly basis until the week of Monday, December 4. At that time, a final pass will be conducted throughout the town, starting from the west side to the east side.

If anyone has any questions regarding the schedule, contact the Highway Department at 872-1443, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Pharmaceutical Waste Pickup

There will be a pharmaceutical waste pickup at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 226 Phillips Road, on Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Any unused, unwanted or expired medication is taken for disposal. No appointment is necessary.

This event is of particular interest to anyone (like me) who has come to appreciate the CVS drug collection drop box at the police department entrance to Webster Town Hall. Since construction began at Town Hall, that location has been out of service and will be until the building’s renovations are completed. That’s going to be a while, so you might want to take advantage of this other opportunity to get rid of those expired medications.

If you don’t feel comfortable with your personal information on the bottles, you can remove the pills and put them in a plastic bag for disposal.

Run, Walk or Roll with me this Sunday

OK, my friends, here’s something to get you up and moving Sunday morning. It’s great exercise with a lot of new friends, doesn’t cost too much AND will benefit a great cause.

It the 3rd annual Run, Walk & Roll 5K and 1 mile stroll to benefit Challenger Miracle Field. I ran this race in its first year, and so I can attest to how fun it is. And I’ll be there again this Sunday.

Great progress has already been made on Challenger Miracle Field, which is located behind Town Hall on Ridge Road. Games are already being played there, but there’s much more work to be done. Proceeds from this event will help finish off some final details and construct the Play with Possibilities Playground. These inclusive spaces will provide people with developmental, physical, or intellectual disabilities a barrier-free, safe, accessible place to experience the health benefits and joy of play through baseball, other team sports, and adaptive recreational equipment.

This all-inclusive family-friendly event encourages participants to run or walk, push a wheelchair, push themselves in a wheelchair, or participate with other assistive devices including adaptive bicycles and tricycles.

The courses start and end at Webster Thomas High School, 800 Five Mile Line Road. Registration is open at 8 a.m. The 5K, including wheelchair athletes, will kick off at 9:30.  The 1-mile stroll will begin at 9:35. Packet pick-up and in-person registration will take place that morning. Prizes will be awarded, and the first 250 registrants get a free t-shirt, which you can wear proudly to show what a good person you are.

Cost is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile stroll, if you register online by Friday night. After that, in-person registration at the race will cost $30/$20.

IMPORTANT PARKING NOTE: 

Due to a conflict with an event being held at the high school, race participants are being asked to park at Willink Middle School just down the road at 900 Publishers Parkway. It’s only a short walk away, and the registration table will be moved to between the track and tennis courts to accommodate.

But it won’t matter. It’s going to be a beautiful day. Hope to see you there!

Plank North receives huge donation

There was some incredibly surprising and wonderful news out of Plank Road North Elementary School Friday morning.

Burlington Stores, Inc., in partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, donated $10,000 to the school, in celebration of the opening of its new store in BayTowne Plaza.

Two representatives from the new store presented the huge check to principal Craig Bodensteiner during the school’s monthly assembly, attended by all of the school’s staff members and students.

It was a total surprise. No one at the school aside from the administrators and front office staff knew about the donation. The cheers from the assembled crowd were loud and long.

Bodensteiner and assistant principal Heather Balsamo say they don’t know yet what the funds will be used for, but Balsamo did add that the donation “will benefit all of our students.”

Burlington makes a donation to a local school in each Grand Opening market to celebrate each new store location.

What an amazing business, what an amazing program. Clearly Burlington is committed to being a strong community partner, and I for one am going to show my thanks by shopping there.

Bygone Blog: Spam, spam, spam

This is the sixth in my series of Bygone Blogs, in which I am re-posting some of my favorite blogs from the last 8 years. This one was originally published on August 25, 2012.

Looking for some cheap entertainment? Poke through your spam folder sometime. Don’t worry, if you don’t actually click on a link, you’re safe. I do this every once in a while when I get bored. I visit my Gmail spam folder and see how many people want to give me money or need help carrying all their money-stuffed suitcases to the United States, or consider me a perfect candidate for a cheap loan. (I don’t get the male enhancement ads very much anymore. Maybe they wised up.)

So those always make me giggle. But if I’m in the mood for some real gut-breaking laughs, I check the spam comments I get on my WordPress blog. Most of them try to commend me on my excellent blog and insightful comments.

At least I think that’s the case. Sometimes it’s hard to tell.  Here’s an example (and I swear, I did not edit this for clarity):

I wanted to post you that very small remark in order to say thanks a lot as before with your spectacular suggestions you’ve shown here. This is simply remarkably open-handed of people like you to offer unreservedly exactly what a number of people would have offered as an e book in order to make some cash for their own end, notably seeing that you might have tried it in case you wanted. These tactics also acted to be the great way to recognize that the rest have similar zeal just as mine to understand a little more with regard to this matter. Certainly there are thousands of more fun instances up front for folks who read your site.

Webster Monday mailbag

Happy October! Here are a few local events to start filling up those empty calendar pages.

St. Rita Craft Sale

St. Rita School will hold its 33rd annual Craft Sale on Saturday October 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

100 vendors will be set up throughout the school’s gymnasium and classrooms, selling all sorts of unique items. Food will be available for purchase, and raffles for winning. Plus, there’s plenty of free parking.

St. Rita is at 1008 Maple Drive in West Webster. Call (585) 671-3132 for more information.

Organ Concert 

The Webster Baptist Church will host an afternoon of organ music on Sunday October 22, featuring the famed Chapin Pipe Organ. It begins at 3 p.m.

There’s no admission charge, but a free will offering will be gratefully accepted. The Webster Baptist Church is located at 59 South Avenue, in the village of Webster.

Here are a few fun Halloween events for kids at the Webster Public Library:

Teen Halloween Party

This event is just for teens, a special Halloween party filled with all kinds of fabulously frightening fun.  Teens are encouraged to come in costume for a costume contest. You’ll be snacking on some devilishly good treats and create some unearthly crafts.

The party’s scheduled for Thursday, October 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Teens in grades 6-12 are welcome. Registration opens Wednesday October 4. Click here

Library Trick-or-Treat Night

Children of all ages are invited to put on their costumes and trick-or-treat around the entire library on Thursday October 26. Afterwards, enjoy games, activities, snacks and lots of spooky fun for the whole family.

The fun happens from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and no registration is required.

The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road. The entrance is at the rear of the plaza.
