Run, walk or roll to benefit Miracle Field

The 5th annual Run, Walk & Roll 5K and Miracle Field Stroll is scheduled for Sunday Sept. 29, and I’d like to encourage EVERYONE to take part.

Not a runner? No problem. You can walk. You can even bring along the baby in a stroller, or your dog. The main thing is that you come, because it’s going to be great exercise with a lot of new friends, doesn’t cost too much AND it benefits a great cause.

The annual Run, Walk & Roll benefits Challenger Miracle Field, an adaptive sports field for children with developmental, physical or intellectual disabilities. Specifically, this year the event is raising money to help complete the all-inclusive Karpus Family Play with Possibilities Playground,

This year’s race will be even better than ever, since for the very first time, it will begin and end right at Miracle Field, behind Town Hall on Ridge Road. In its four previous years, it started at Thomas High School, but it just seems RIGHT that everything is focused around Miracle Field this year. After all, it’s a beautiful facility and it’s a great opportunity for more people to see it and realize that.

The race course will begin at the corner of Hard Rd. and Van Ingen Drive. Runners will go north on Hard Road, onto the Route 104 bike trail, around the North Ponds loop and back to Miracle Field, where refreshments await.

The Miracle Field Stroll with take place on the field and on the sidewalk by the soon-to-be-built Karpus Family Play with Possibilities Playground! You’ll enjoy the field that so many children of different abilities have been playing on and enjoy music to dance along with as you walk.

Cost is just $20 for the 5K (for both runners and wheelchair athletes) and $17 for strollers. On the day of the race, the cost goes up to $30 and $22, so try to register early.

Two upcoming runs will benefit great causes

So, I’m a runner. If you’d told me 10 years ago that I would actually say those words, I would have called you crazy.

But life takes you strange places sometimes, and these days I find myself running 5Ks with some regularity, and when I come across one that I particularly like to run — which means it benefits a cause I really want to support — I like telling you all about them.

Today I want to pass along information about two upcoming races. The first, which is happening this coming weekend, is actually not in Webster, but is a cause near and dear to a close Webster friend of mine. I also like it because the run is flat and scenic, right along the Erie Canal.

Marco+LogoIt’s the second annual Mark Callanan Memorial 5K, scheduled for this coming Saturday Aug. 3 at 9 a.m., beginning at the Veterans Memorial in Potter Park, W. Church Street in Fairport.

Mark Callanan grew up in Fairport, graduated from Fairport High School in 2005 and attended SUNY Geneseo. He served seven years in the Marine Corps, and settled in Washington D.C. There, in June 2015 in front of the Capitol Building, he proposed to his sweetheart Kristi Altieri. They set a wedding date for the following year.

On the morning of June 7, 2016, just two months before the wedding, Mark was warming up to play basketball and collapsed with cardiac arrest. He was 28 years old.

At 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, Mark Callanan was a very big man, and he had a heart to match. His fun-loving spirit improved the lives of everyone he met. The 5K has been organized to celebrate that spirit, has another purpose as well. Funds raised through registration, t-shirt sales and more are being used to create a scholarship in Mark’s name at Geneseo.

Last year’s first annual run raised an amazing $25,000 for the endowment fund, and Mark’s friends and family hope to add to that with this year’s event.

This second race isn’t happening until late September, but I’ve already signed up for it, and I’ve run it every year.

It’s the 5th annual Run, Walk & Roll 5K and 1 mile stroll to benefit Challenger Miracle Field. The event invites participants to run or walk, push a wheelchair, push themselves in a wheelchair, or participate with other assistive devices including adaptive bicycles and tricycles.

Great progress has already been made on Challenger Miracle Field, which is located behind Town Hall, 1000 Ridge Road. Games are being played there, and now the focus has turned to completing the Karpus Family Play with Possibilities Playground, a barrier-free, safe, accessible place for all children, regardless of their physical challenges.

In previous years, this race began and ended at Webster Thomas High School. But this year, for the first time, it will all happen at Miracle Field itself, which I think is an awesome idea. The 5K will start at the corner of Van Ingen Drive and Hard Road, behind Town Hall, take runners through North Ponds Park and down the bike path back to Miracle Field. The Miracle Field Stroll will actually take place on the field itself.

The race is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 29 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $20 for the 5K and $17 for the one-mile stroll, if you register online in advance. After that, in-person registration at the race will cost $30/$22. Prizes will be awarded, and the first 200 registrants get a free t-shirt, which you can wear proudly to show what a good person you are. Click here for more information and to register.

OK, my friends, here’s something to get you up and moving Sunday morning Sept. 30. It’s great exercise with a lot of new friends, doesn’t cost too much AND will benefit a great cause.

It the 4th annual Run, Walk & Roll 5K and 1 mile stroll to benefit Challenger Miracle Field. I’ve run this race every year since it began, and so I can attest to how fun it is. And I’ll be there again this Sunday.

Great progress has already been made on Challenger Miracle Field, which is located behind Town Hall on Ridge Road. Games are already being played there, and work is being completed on the restrooms and concession building. The inclusive field and accompanying Play With Possibilities playground will provide people with developmental, physical, or intellectual disabilities a barrier-free, safe, accessible place to experience the health benefits and joy of play through baseball, other team sports, and adaptive recreational equipment.

Run, Walk and Roll is an all-inclusive family-friendly event which invites participants to run or walk, push a wheelchair, push themselves in a wheelchair, or participate with other assistive devices including adaptive bicycles and tricycles.

The courses start and end at Webster Thomas High School, 800 Five Mile Line Road. Registration is open at 8 a.m. The 5K, including wheelchair athletes, will kick off at 9:30. The 1-mile stroll will begin at 9:35. Packet pick-up and in-person registration will take place that morning. Prizes will be awarded, and the first 200 registrants get a free t-shirt, which you can wear proudly to show what a good person you are.

Cost is $20 for the 5K and $17 for the one-mile stroll, if you register online by Friday night. After that, in-person registration at the race will cost $30/$22.

5Ks come to Webster this summer

Runners, take note, because this is something that rarely happens.

If you like to compete in 5Ks, but don’t like traveling too far out of town to do so, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s not just one, but TWO 5K races coming up within four weeks of each other, right here in Webster.

The first is the First Responders 5K, scheduled for Friday August 31 at 6:30 p.m. This is a brand new race, created to honor and support our local first responders.

This information about the race comes from the event’s Facebook page:

The First Responders 5K will recognize the strength, perseverance, and courage of police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and their families in our local community.

First responders put their lives on the line for us every day as they face hardships that most of us will never know. The repetitive negative experience of stressful and potentially traumatic events that first responders face on a daily basis leaves them particularly vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder.

The event is designed to raise awareness for PTSD in first responders and raise funds for a local charity to provide support for those who suffer from its effects.

The race begins at Fireman’s Field on Ridge Road, just west of the village of Webster. Cost is $20, or $10 for active first responders. T-shirts are not included but may be ordered for an additional $10. The race will be chip-timed, with finisher medals, post-race food and live music. This next race also benefits a great cause.

Proceeds from this event will help build Play with Possibilities Playground at the Challenger Miracle Field of Greater Rochester Complex. These inclusive spaces will provide people with developmental, physical, or intellectual disabilities a barrier-free, safe, accessible place to experience the health benefits and joy of play through baseball, other team sports, and adaptive recreational equipment. All kids will be able to participate in elevated and ground-level play with ramps, transfer points, and sensory–rich play opportunities throughout so that the play space is friendly to all children and parents as well as other caregivers, such as grandparents and service animals.

This all-inclusive family-friendly event encourages participants to run or walk, push a wheelchair, push themselves in a wheelchair, or participate with other assistive devices including adaptive bicycles and tricycles.

The courses start and end at Webster Thomas High School, 800 Five Mile Line Road. Registration is open at 8 a.m. The 5K, including wheelchair athletes, will kick off at 9:30. The 1-mile stroll will begin at 9:35. Packet pick-up and in-person registration will take place that morning. Prizes will be awarded, and the first 200 registrants get a free t-shirt, which you can wear proudly to show what a good person you are.

Proceeds from this event will help finish off some final details and construct the Play with Possibilities Playground. These inclusive spaces will provide people with developmental, physical, or intellectual disabilities a barrier-free, safe, accessible place to experience the health benefits and joy of play through baseball, other team sports, and adaptive recreational equipment.

This all-inclusive family-friendly event encourages participants to run or walk, push a wheelchair, push themselves in a wheelchair, or participate with other assistive devices including adaptive bicycles and tricycles.

IMPORTANT PARKING NOTE: 

Due to a conflict with an event being held at the high school, race participants are being asked to park at Willink Middle School just down the road at 900 Publishers Parkway. It’s only a short walk away, and the registration table will be moved to between the track and tennis courts to accommodate.

But it won’t matter. It’s going to be a beautiful day. Hope to see you there!

Play ball!

I was honored to be on hand yesterday for the official opening ceremonies for Challenger Miracle Field, a beautiful new sports facility for young athletes with developmental, physical or intellectual disabilities.

It’s located in Ridge Park, 1000 Ridge Road, behind Town Hall. It looks a lot like the Little League fields you’re familiar with, but it’s actually different in a lot of important ways.

It’s totally flat, for starters. There’s no dirt, and no grass. The pitcher’s mound and bases are not raised at all, but instead are painted into the brightly-colored rubberized artificial surface, which allows for all players to round the bases without fear of tripping, whether they’re walking, running, using a wheelchair or walker. The outfield fence is much closer to home than normally, allowing these children a real chance to hit a home run. And the fence is removable so the field can be adapted for other sports.

The field was built especially for the Challenger teams, who are typically given the lowest priority for field availability and only get to play if fields are not in use by other Little League, school or town teams. But the developers also made it clear that the field is available for use by the community; it’s for children and adults of all abilities.

There were a lot of accolades handed out at the almost one-hour long ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday, but one of the comments especially stood out.

At least one speaker called the new Miracle Field a “field of dreams.” That’s a phrase that’s tossed about a lot these days for lesser accomplishments, but I think it fits here.

In Challenger Miracle Field, these kids now have the chance to experience the thrill of playing on a baseball field that looks and feels like the stadiums they see on TV. Every weekend, they can put on a jersey and a baseball cap, step (or roll) up to the plate, raise a bat and be just like any other kid who loves sports.

Thank you to everyone who made this field a reality. Your efforts and dedication have been well rewarded and you are right to be proud.

The work is not done, however. Completely handicapped-accessible restrooms and playground, and a pavilion are still being planned for construction early next year. Fundraising continues to accomplish these goals.

Webster Garlic Festival, September 9 and 10 at the Webster Parks and Recreation complex on Chiyoda Drive. Food, fun, and lots of garlic. Hours are 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
