Mark your calendar for these town events

CaptureThis week’s column by Town of Webster Supervisor Ron Nesbitt is just packed with interesting news which I am pleased to pass on.

Road construction has begun at the corner of Phillips and Schlegel roads. This project will include widening the roadway, widening the shoulders, and completing water main and drainage work.  If the summer weather cooperates, everything should be completed by this fall.

The next Pharmaceutical Waste Pickup event has been scheduled for Saturday April 28 at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 226 Phillips Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Any unused, unwanted or expired medication is taken for disposal. No appointment is necessary.  If you do not feel comfortable with your personal information on the bottles, you can remove the pills and put them in a plastic bag for disposal.

And remember also that there’s a CVS Drug Collection unit at the Webster Town Hall right inside the Police Department entrance.  It’s open during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. As with the pharmaceutical waste pickup, items accepted at the drop box include any unused, unwanted or expired medication such as prescriptions, prescription patches, prescription medication, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples and medications for pets.  Items that are NOT accepted include hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, aerosol cans, ointments, lotions, or liquids, thermometers, needles (sharps) and medication from businesses or clinics

Details are still being worked out, but the annual Town of Webster Open House has been scheduled for Saturday, May 12. Watch for more information soon.

The Town of Webster’s annual Summer Celebration is slated for Saturday June 23 from 4 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. at the Webster Recreation Building, 1350 Chiyoda Drive. It features food trucks, games, inflatables, live music, and fireworks. More information to come about this as well.

Finally, Webster’s newest festival, the Waterfront Arts Festival will take place this year on Saturday and Sunday July 28 and 29 at North Ponds Park. The annual event attracts fine artisans from all over Monroe County. You’ll also find food trucks, live entertainment, a wine tasting booth and other exhibits.

Webster community mailbag

mailbagLots of events coming up around town in the next several weeks. Let’s get right into them:

The Webster Public Library is hosting the 5th annual Community Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, March 14, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.

Residents can connect with several Webster organizations that have volunteer opportunities available, including:

Friends of the Webster Public Library, Friends of Webster Trails, Heritage Christian Services, Hill Haven Nursing and Rehab, Hope Ministry, Maplewood Nursing Home, Never Say Never Foundation, Webster Arboretum, Webster Challenger Baseball, Webster Comfort Care Home, Webster Fire Department, Webster Museum and Historical Society, West Webster Fire Department, and more.

The Webster Public Library is located in Webster Plaza, 980 Ridge Road. The entrance is around the back.

The First Baptist Church of Penfield has announced their next Flapjack Community Breakfast, on Saturday March 17 from 8 to 10 a.m.

Guests will enjoy pancakes, pure maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage, and more for just $5.00 per person. All are welcome, and the venue is handicapped accessible.

All March proceeds will go directly to benefit Penfield Area Churches for Habitat for Humanity: a coalition of churches from Penfield, Webster, and East Rochester working with Flower City Habitat for Humanity to eliminate housing poverty in our area by financing and constructing homes for low income homeowners in Rochester.

The Webster Association of Senior Program Supporters, a not-for-profit senior transportation group, will host a Model Train Show on Saturday and Sunday March 24 and 25 at the Webster Recreation Center, 1350 Chiyoda Drive.

There will be lots of displays and lots of vendors offering trains and accessories. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children, and free for kids under 12.

The Woman’s Club of Rochester will hold its annual Fashion Show/Luncheon fundraiser on Tuesday, April 24 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Midvale Country Club, 2387 Baird Road in Penfield. . Attached is the flyer describing the event and the address for reservations.

Cost is $25, and proceeds will benefit Challenger Miracle Field and Meals on Wheels.Capture

This fun event will feature a menu of Menu: haddock French, chicken Madeira or vegetable quiche; baked potato, steamed asparagus and a garden salad; coffee, tea and upside down cake for dessert.

Following lunch, participants will enjoy a fashion show presented by “J. Jill.”

Tuesday Webster mailbag

Today’s mailbag begins with a follow-up on a blog I wrote several days ago about our neighbors from the Webster Presbyterian Church and Penfield Presbyterian Church.  Ten church members are right now in New Jersey, preparing to assist help with continuing efforts to rebuild after Superstorm Sandy, which devastated the area five years ago.

Today I received a photo of most of the group members, taken just before they left town. Two other members will be meeting them in NJ.

The missionaries expect to be working on a home in Brigantine, NJ, where they will be installing flooring, hanging interior doors, installing trim, painting and possibly hanging kitchen cabinets. Then they’ll head to Atlantic City, where they will help repair a deck, finish some drywall and do some painting.

They’ll be returning to Webster on October 21.

There will be a pharmaceutical waste pickup at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 226 Phillips Road, on Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Any unused, unwanted or expired prescription and/or over the counter medications will be accepted for disposal. No appointment is necessary.

If you don’t feel comfortable with your personal information on the bottles, you can remove the pills and put them in a plastic bag for disposal.

The event is part of the DEA’s 14th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This is a great opportunity to rid yourselves of those old pills, especially since the drop box normally located at Town Hall is inaccessible while the building is being remodeled.

The Town of Webster Highway Department will start the annual Leaf Pick-Up on Monday, October 23, weather permitting. Every effort will be made to pick up leaves on a weekly basis until the week of Monday, December 4th. At that time, a final pass will be conducted throughout the town, starting from the west side to the east side.

If anyone has any questions regarding the annual Leaf Pick-up, please contact the Highway Department at 872-1443, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

WVFD open houseI’ll be posting more about this event next week, but here’s a preview of a fun activity for the kids.

The Webster Volunteer Fire Department will hold their annual open house on Saturday October 28 during the Village of Webster’s Trick or Treat Trail.

The fire house at 35 South Avenue will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with giveaways, refreshments, fire equipment and safety displays, demonstrations, and special activities for children of all ages.

Special events and activities will include: free doughnuts, cider and coffee for the adults; lots of fire trucks and emergency vehicles for the kids to check out and sit in; helmets and coloring books for the kids (while supplies last); the “burning house,” which kids can “put out” using a real fire hose; and lots of opportunities to chat with our local first responders.

And of course, firefighters will be handing out candy for all the trick-or-treaters.

News from the town

The latest missive from Supervisor Nesbitt was packed with so much useful information, it warranted a blog all its own.

For starters, the town has updated its website, adding a brand new section called “Living Here.” You’ll find it nestled under the “About Us” tab on the top of the site. Supervisor Nesbitt describes it as “a one-stop spot for all aspects of living in Webster.” Its sub-links include “Retirement Living,” “Addiction and Recovery Support Resources,” “Organizations and Clubs” and “Community Support Groups.”

It’s a good start, and there’s a ways to go to fully represent all that our town has to offer. But, as Nesbitt writes, it’s “an ongoing community outreach effort, and these new sections will be continually updated for residents.”

Leaf Pick-Up Begins

We knew summer couldn’t last forever, so the announcement of the autumn leaf pick-up schedule should come as no surprise.

The Town of Webster Highway Department will start the annual Leaf Pick-Up on Monday October 23, weather permitting. Every effort will be made to pick up leaves on a weekly basis until the week of Monday, December 4. At that time, a final pass will be conducted throughout the town, starting from the west side to the east side.

If anyone has any questions regarding the schedule, contact the Highway Department at 872-1443, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

This event is of particular interest to anyone (like me) who has come to appreciate the CVS drug collection drop box at the police department entrance to Webster Town Hall. Since construction began at Town Hall, that location has been out of service and will be until the building’s renovations are completed. That’s going to be a while, so you might want to take advantage of this other opportunity to get rid of those expired medications.

Webster Mailbag

mailbagI’ve packed a lot into today’s mailbag, partly because when I was at Community Arts Day I picked up special-event informational flyers from several  of the community agencies there. So let’s start with a listing of some of those events, then go on to mulch and drugs.

A Village Idiots Bash Fundraiser will be hosted on Sunday April 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Coach Sports Bar, 19 West Main Street in Webster. Local band Mesh will provide the entertainment to help the Village Idiots raise money to fight cancer. Admission is $5, which includes pizza, raffles, 50/50s and fun with friends new and old.

The Webster Museum and Historical Society will host a special program at the museum on Saturday April 29 beginning at 2 pm. Learn about an actual archaeological dig near Bay Road which has uncovered some Native American artifacts. The museum is located at 18 Lapham Park in the village. A donation drive at Savers, 980 Ridge Road in Webster, on May 6 will benefit the Friends of the Webster Library. From 9 am to noon, you can drop off clothes, bags, towels, bedding, hats, curtains and other soft goods, small appliances, tools, toys, kitchen items and games.

The Webster Baptist Church has announced that the next Crop Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday May 7 at the church, 59 South Ave., beginning at 1:30. For more information call Dough Klick at (585) 671-0485.

Mulch is Available at Town Hall

The mulch is back.

Every spring the Webster Highway Department delivers tons of mulch to the parking lot at Town Hall that Webster residents can retrieve for free for home use. This mulch has been composted by the Highway Department for the last year by the Highway employees from leaves picked up from resident’s yards.

They will continue to replenish the pile each day until the tons of mulch are depleted in the upcoming weeks.

The Town Hall also has a CVS Drug Collection unit at the Webster Town Hall. This permanent pharmaceutical waste drop box can be found inside the Webster Town Hall, located at the Police Department entrance, 1000 Ridge Road, during regular business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
