Webster Monday mailbag

Happy October! Here are a few local events to start filling up those empty calendar pages.

St. Rita Craft Sale

St. Rita School will hold its 33rd annual Craft Sale on Saturday October 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

100 vendors will be set up throughout the school’s gymnasium and classrooms, selling all sorts of unique items. Food will be available for purchase, and raffles for winning. Plus, there’s plenty of free parking.

St. Rita is at 1008 Maple Drive in West Webster. Call (585) 671-3132 for more information.

Organ Concert 

The Webster Baptist Church will host an afternoon of organ music on Sunday October 22, featuring the famed Chapin Pipe Organ. It begins at 3 p.m.

There’s no admission charge, but a free will offering will be gratefully accepted. The Webster Baptist Church is located at 59 South Avenue, in the village of Webster.

Here are a few fun Halloween events for kids at the Webster Public Library:

Teen Halloween Party

This event is just for teens, a special Halloween party filled with all kinds of fabulously frightening fun.  Teens are encouraged to come in costume for a costume contest. You’ll be snacking on some devilishly good treats and create some unearthly crafts.

The party’s scheduled for Thursday, October 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Teens in grades 6-12 are welcome. Registration opens Wednesday October 4. Click here

Library Trick-or-Treat Night

Children of all ages are invited to put on their costumes and trick-or-treat around the entire library on Thursday October 26. Afterwards, enjoy games, activities, snacks and lots of spooky fun for the whole family.

The fun happens from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and no registration is required.

The Webster Public Library is located at 980 Ridge Road. The entrance is at the rear of the plaza.

Webster Marching Band welcomes autumn with music

The Webster Marching Band’s annual celebration of autumn will feature a touch of winter this year.

Autumn Fanfare flyerFINALThe band’s 32nd annual Autumn Fanfare is scheduled for Saturday, October 7 at the Webster Schroeder High School stadium.

This terrific community event is a premier field show and competition, hosted by the The Pride of Webster marching band, but also featuring performances by six Greater Rochester area bands.

The Webster Marching Band — comprised of 64 middle and high school musicians and color guard performers — will perform their 2017-18 program, “froZEN.” It features the music of Mark Ford and Madonna, and takes a unique approach to the sounds and imagery of a Chinese winter.

It sounds amazing.

The show will begin at 7 p.m., and gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance at Hegedorns and $8 at the gate. Webster CSD student and staff tickets are just $2 with a Webster student or staff ID. Children under 5 are free. A few food trucks will also be on hand if you get hungry.

Webster Schroeder High School is located at 875 Ridge Road.

Keeping cool at school

You know you work in a great school district when, on one of the hottest days of the year, one of the elementary school principals springs for freeze-pops for the entire school.

That’s what happened at Plank Road North Elementary School Tuesday. As the outside temperatures flirted with 90 degrees for the second day in a row, temperatures inside the un-air-conditioned school soared as well. Teachers and students alike were melting.

Principal Craig Bodensteiner to the rescue. In anticipation of the continuing heat wave, Bodensteiner hatched his plan Monday evening, and Tuesday morning headed to Wegmans and bought six cases of freeze-pops — almost all they had. He tucked them in the school’s walk-in freezer (he didn’t want to come out, he reported). Then, just before the end of the day, after they had all frozen solid, he and Assistant Principal Heather Balsamo made the rounds to every classroom and handed them out.

New 5K will benefit Wayne Middle School

There’s a new race in town, and it sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

color run(BTW, when I say “in town,” I mean Ontario. And when I say “race,” I mean an un-timed 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk. But the fun part? That’s totally accurate.)

It’s called the My School Color Run, and it’s being sponsored by the parent/teacher organization at Wayne Central Middle School as a fund-raiser to help offset the costs for the school’s 8th grade trip to Washington, DC.  Throughout the course participants will experience color splash zones where they’ll be doused in color and end with a final color toss celebration. (That’s the super fun part.)

The race is scheduled for Sunday morning, October 8, at Wayne Middle School, 6076 Ontario Center Road, Ontario. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.

Cost for the 5K is $20 for Wayne Central students, $30 for general community members, and $15 for the 1-mile run/walk. Race-day registration will be available, but prices go up after Sept. 22 to $30/$45. Early registrants are also guaranteed a t-shirt and color pack.

There are also going to be vendors and at least one food truck. Bottom line, it should be a great time, for a good cause.

Completed U.S. map will delight Plank North students

In honor of the first day of school (at least for me, anyway), I offer this photo.

Those of you who read my East Extra column may remember a story I wrote in June, about Plank Road North Elementary School kindergarten teacher Peggy Garritano, and her efforts to revitalize the big United States map painted on the playground outside her classroom window.

The last photo I took of the map, which you see above, shows the map after Garritano had finished painting all of the states. But it still needed some final touches.

On Monday I happened by the school and saw the finished product, complete with its bright white state outlines. It’s a thing of beauty, and will be a welcome sight for the students when they come back on Tuesday.

Summer cuteness

In my continuing series of kids having summer fun without the aid of electronics, I submit this super-cute photo.

It was taken Saturday at Webster’s Joe Obbie’s Farmer’s Market, during the market’s annual Back-to-School Day. Children who attended were treated to balloon animals and school-supply gift bags, and could sit in the driver’s seat of a Webster Fire Department truck.

Here are two of those happy children, Grace and Paxton, who even got to try on some real firefighter gear. They’re pictured here with Webster firefighter Sarah Rosenberry, who also happens to be the kids’ music teacher at Plank North Elementary School.

News from the schools

Are you new to Webster? Do you have a kindergartner starting school this September? Don’t forget to register your kids for school.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2017, are eligible to enter school. To attend Webster Schools, students must live in the district with their parents, a legal guardian who is a resident, or meet other requirements such as foster care placement.

Registrations are taken by appointment at the Central Registration Office at Spry Middle School, 119 South Avenue. Call (585) 216-0029 to schedule an appointment. A completed registration packet, along with all required documents, must be provided during the meeting. Packets are available at all WCSD school buildings and on the district website; click on the Central Registration quick link.

In other school news …

When school begins on Tuesday September 5, the Webster Central School District will welcome two new elementary school assistant principals.

Webster CSD is pleased to announce the hiring of two new assistant principals at State Road and Klem Road North elementary schools.

Lucia Kaempffe

Lucia Kaempffe has accepted the position as the new assistant principal at State Road Elementary School, replacing current assistant principal Debra Young, who will be retiring from Webster CSD.

Kaempffe served as assistant principal at Schlegel Road Elementary School from 2003-2009. She has also worked as an elementary school teacher and an adjunct professor at Nazareth College.

Denise Lemcke will be the new assistant principal at Klem Road North Elementary School.

 

Denise LemckeLemcke spent the last two years at Penfield CSD as a K-6 humanities teacher on special assignment, providing leadership in curriculum development and implementation and professional development opportunities for her colleagues. Prior to that, she was a Penfield CSD elementary teacher, and taught kindergarten and first grade at Victor CSD and Guilderland CSD.

WCSD urges new kindergartners to Strive for Five

This is an awesome program, and I highly recommend that if you have a young’un entering kindergarten in Webster this fall, that you put this on your calendar.

(The only thing I DON’T like about this program is that it means that September is not too far away, and I am kind of enjoying my summer.)

The Webster Central School District Strive for Five for School Bus Safety event is coming this August. The program, for 2017-2018 incoming kindergarteners, provides an opportunity for the district’s youngest riders to travel a short distance on a school bus with their parent(s) and to learn important safety procedures for riding the school bus.

The program will start at Willink Middle School, where the bus will pick up participants and bring them to (and from) the transportation department. The buses leave Willink at 6:00 p.m.

Incoming kindergarteners and their parents (no additional children, please) should attend as follows, if at all possible. IF you can’t make your assigned evening, you can come on another, but they district really likes to spread everyone out as much as possible.

August 7 – Plank South
August 8 – Plank North and Dewitt
August 9 – State and Klem North
August 10 – Schlegel and Klem South

Private and parochial schools can attend any one of the four dates.

Big week for food and fun in Webster

Let’s hope the weather holds this week, because there are a lot of fun events coming up.

This week, of course, is when the Webster Firemen’s Carnival returns to town, kicked off with the huge Firemen’s Parade which will take over Main Street in the village on Thursday evening.

You can find all the details here about the Kiddie Parade, the Firemen’s Parade, and the carnival, but here are a few highlights:

  • Wednesday: Carnival opens at 6 pm at Firemen’s Field on Main Street. Featured attraction is a Craft Beer Night.
  • Thursday: The Firemen’s Parade kicks off at 6:30 p.m. , starting at Phillips Road and continuing down Main Street to Firemen’s Field. The carnival is open from 6 pm till late.
  • Friday: Carnival opens at 6 p.m., featuring live entertainment in the beer pavilion.
  • Saturday: The Kiddie Parade will be held beginning at 12 noon (this appears to be a change from previous years when it was held Wednesday night). Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Spry Middle School. The carnival runs through midnight with live entertainment, rides, games, food and drink, a bike raffle, and fireworks to end the night.

And don’t forget about the Webster Marching Band Boosters’ second annual Food Truck Rodeo, scheduled for this Friday July 21 from 5 to 9 pm in Webster Schroeder High School’s front parking lot.

The Marching Band Boosters sponsor various fundraising events throughout the year to help pay for the Webster Marching Band’s equipment, show productions, and competition-related trip expenses.

At least 11 food trucks will be on hand, including Macarollin, Tuscan Wood Fired Pizza, Rob’s Kabobs, The Meatball Truck Co., Midnight Smokin’ BBQ, Meat the Press, Le Petit Poutine, WingNutz, Abbott’s Frozen Custard, Kona Ice, and Smoothies Plus.

There will also be face painting for the kids, a visit by a West Webster Fire Department truck, and live music provided by the Aaron Rizzo Trio. Admittance to the rodeo is FREE, and all proceeds from the food trucks will benefit the Marching Band Boosters and Webster Marching Band members.
