One more chance to vote on the bike racks

A few weeks ago I posted a blog about how the Village of Webster will be installing four new bike racks this summer. Village Board members will have the final decision on where they’ll be placed, but have invited input from the community to help them guide their decision.

I created a survey suggesting nine different locations throughout the village. Thank you to everyone who has taken a minute to fill it out (and it really only takes a minute). To date I’ve received 44 responses, but would love to get some more.

Here’s an update on what people have been telling me so far:

The top two most popular locations so far for the bike racks with the Town of Webster logo are 1) in front of Barry’s Old School Irish/The Garage Sale Store and 2) in Veterans Park. Running a close third is a spot in front of Village Hall.

The top two most popular locations for the racks with the bike insignia are 1) in the parking lot somewhere near Village Bakery and 2) in front of Barry’s/The Garage Sale Store. Those two spots are tied for first, and there’s not a close third.

I will be presenting my findings at the Village Board meeting later this week, so now’s the time to weigh in with your opinion if you’d like to. To read more about how the bike racks came to be, click here to go to my original blog. Two opportunities to help save lives

The two-day Webster Community Blood Drive is coming up in just a few weeks, on June 5 and 6.

You know the one. It’s the one advertised by the big white signs placed all around town, and where you get raffle tickets just for showing up to win some fabulous prizes from our local business owners.

I’ll get into a bit more detail about that in a minute. But first, in case you can’t make that drive, here’s another opportunity coming up tomorrow, May 23:

200398_3430269The North East Joint Fire District and Webster Volunteer Fire Department are hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Webster Volunteer Fire Department’s Enderlin Station, 35 South Ave. in the Village of Webster on Thursday fro 1 to 7 p.m.

This annual drive encourages friendly competition between Webster Fire Department and West Webster Fire Department to see which can donate the most units. But of course they’re also hoping that all eligible donors in our community will come out and “answer the call,” and give blood in honor of our everyday heroes.

The Webster Community Blood Drive will return on Wednesday, June 5 at St. Paul’s Church on Hard Rd. and Thursday June 6 at the Webster Recreation Center. Both days will run from noon to 7 p.m.

Already we have commitment for prizes from Barry’s Old School Irish, Knucklehead Craft Brewing, ROC & Soul Fitness, Beyond Cuts, the Chicken Coop, Webster Hots and Ploty’s (although there will be many more). We’re also pleased to have several new businesses join us this year, including The Pickled Paintbrush, Lala, The North Bee and The Best You Spa. And of course, everyone’s favorite prize, a coupon for a free pint of ice cream from Bruster’s will be handed to every donor who walks through the door!

An update on the bike racks

A little more than a week ago I posted a blog about how the Village of Webster will be installing four new bike racks this summer. Village Board members will have the final decision on where they’ll be placed, but have invited input from the community to help them guide their decision.

So I created a survey suggesting nine different locations throughout the village. Thank you to everyone who has taken a minute to fill it out (and it really only takes a minute). I’ve gotten 36 responses so far, but would love to have a lot more before I present my findings to the Board in a few weeks.

Here’s an update on what people have been telling me so far:

The Wine Walks are back!

I think the village might be pushing things a bit. I mean, it IS only May and the way things are going this spring, it might actually still be snowing on May 18.

But that being said, the first Village Wine Walk of the season has been scheduled for Saturday May 18.

From 4 to 7 p.m. that evening, merchants throughout the village will open their doors for wine lovers to sample a wide variety of wines and spirits. Several new businesses will be participating this time around, including The Pickled Paintbrush, McAllister Sign, Webster Home Improvement and MJ Gabel Jewelers.

Tickets are just $15, and all proceeds will benefit the Webster Museum. They’re available online at the Webster Business Improvement District website or directly from Eventbrite.

This is a really fun event, and it usually sells out, so get your tickets soon.

Looking ahead in the village, Movies in the Park will begin July 16 with fun family flicks, another Wine Walks is scheduled for August 3, a Beer Walk on September 14 and the very popular Bourbon Bash returns on November 16.

Check the BID Facebook page and website regularly for updates and news of other events happening in the village.

Webster Eye Care celebrates 25 years

Congratulations are in order for Dr. Shari and Mike Gustin, owners of Webster Eye Care Associates, who on Thursday celebrated their business’ 25th anniversary.

Webster Eye Care Associates is located on Main Street in the Village of Webster. On May 2, 1994, they took over the practice from Dr. Robert Brennan and have been a proud part of the village community ever since.

Dr. Shari Gustin is a doctor of optometry and Mike Gustin is a licensed optician. As they grew the practice, they brought on additional licensed professionals including optometrist Dr. Jason Hochreiter, optician Brad Cadwell, optician Sarah Collins and administrative staff members. Mike and Shari are both strong village supporters who enjoy taking part in the village’s many special events and projects.

The Gustins are marking their silver anniversary with several specials: They’re raffling off one pair of Maui Jim and one pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses every Thursday in the month of May; giving away a brand new pair of Maui Jim sunglasses in a social media contest; and are offering a buy one/get one 50% off special for all patients, current or new (please make an appointment first!)

Good Smoke is good stuff

I took a while, but I have finally tried out one of the Village of Webster’s newest restaurants, Good Smoke BBQ on Main Street.

Good Smoke opened in January, the third location for the restaurant, which is also located in East Rochester and Chili. I’d been hearing good reviews and was in the mood for barbecue, so it was a good choice after a long week of house cleaning as we prepared our former home to go on the market.

So my husband and I (new village residents that we are) walked down there last night for dinner. My first thought as I scanned the menu was that things were a bit pricey. Not exorbitantly so, but above average from what I would expect from a BBQ place. (Admittedly, I haven’t been in many.) Hoping that it would be a large enough serving for two, we decided to split a three-meat combo platter, priced at $22.99, comprised of 1/4 rack of ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, a piece of corn bread and two sides (we chose mac salad and baked beans).

It was a great decision.

I needn’t have worried that there would be enough for two people. Both the meat servings and the sides were generous, and by the time we had plowed through them and the corn bread, we were plenty full.

And everything was delicious. The rib and pork sauces were pretty sweet, which I loved. The beans were also very tasty and my husband enjoyed the mac salad (although I prefer my mac salad a bit more vinegar-y). I also give high marks to the corn bread, which was nicely moist.  The servers were friendly and the service was fast.

So bottom line, I definitely recommend Good Smoke, and we will definitely be back. The meat combo platter was a good choice this time, but knowing how generous the servings are, I wouldn’t hesitate to try one of the sandwiches or BBQ bowls next time, maybe for lunch.

Inglés para adultos con guardería opcional

Marissa Birke, owner of one of the Village of Webster’s newest businesses, The Pickled Paintbrush, is already becoming an active member of our local community. She’s teamed up with an ESOL teacher to offer free English classes for adults.

From April 29 through May 20, adults looking to improve their English language skills are invited to spend Monday evenings at The Pickled Paintbrush. Each session is 90 minutes long, and are designed to help adults improve their English skills through interactive activities, while getting to know people living in your community.

Marissa wrote,

This program is important to me because I want to help give back to the community. I’ve also taught Adult ESOL classes in Maryland (it is was my focus in grad school), and loved working with this group.

One of the best parts of the program is that childcare will be available during these sessions, for potty-trained children ages 4 and up. The Pickled Paintbrush will provide an art program for children while the adults are in class.

All skill levels are welcome to join the classes. There’s no charge, but participants are asked to register in advance so they know how many adults and children to expect. Make your own essential oil sprays

Just a quick note this morning to pass along news of a special event being hosted this Saturday at one of Webster’s most special new shops, Lala of Webster.

It’s called an Essential Oil Open House Make & Take Event. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., customers can stop in anytime and make your own essential oil sprays. Owner Lisa Schlonski will provide 21 different “recipes” for hand cleaners, air fresheners, body sprays, counter sprays and more, all using distilled water as a base. It’s a great way to sample several different products, using 100% therapeutic grade oils, at a much lower investment. The average cost to make one of the recipes is $2.77.

The open house is Saturday Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lala of Webster, 38 East Main Street in the village. Visit Lala’s Facebook page to learn more about this cute little shop.

It’s official –the Garlic Festival is back

I know, I know. I already told you last October that the Garlic Festival was returning. But now it’s really, really official, because the call has gone out for vendors.

The name has been changed — it’s now the Rochester Garlic Festival instead of the Webster Garlic Festival — but all of the other great things about the festival have not changed. There will be lots of garlic vendors and cooking demonstrations, other vendors and community agencies, live entertainment, food trucks and more. PLUS all proceeds will benefit Challenger Miracle Field!

The Rochester Garlic Festival is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Webster Recreation Center.

BUT FIRST the festival needs vendors. Organizers are now accepting vendor applications. For details about booth fees, visit the Rochester Garlic Festival website, or click here to download an application.

Webster Hots joins Spry MS to recognize students

Bill and Kelly Mutschler, owners of Webster Hots in the Village of Webster, have teamed up with Spry Middle School to recognize star students.

Once a month, Spry administrators will choose a CARE Student of the Month, randomly choosing from a collection of CARE cards. The cards are submitted by staff members, who use them to nominate students for the award, based on students’ exhibiting CARE behaviors (cooperation, accountability, respect and excellence).

One winner each month will be awarded a $20 gift card from Webster Hots. Here’s a video explaining the whole program:

The first honoree will be announced on Webster Hots’ Facebook page on Monday, Dec. 31. Winning students will also be posted in a special spot reserved on Webster Hots’ wall for CARE Program honorees.
